Student success in AMEB exam

Congratulations to Henry Andrew of Year 10 for completing an external exam for Grade 4 Clarinet.

This required Henry to perform in front of external examiners and perform various musical works to a high standard. He was also required to play designated scales, arpeggios and technical work by memory, as well as  being examined in music-aural skills and general knowledge for that level.

After much preparation, Henry attended the exam at the AMEB's (Australian Music Education Board) Examination Centre in Auburn in late April this year and was awarded an "A+" for his exam!

Well done and once again congratulations Henry!

Message from KSC Drama Captains

Room 2 has been made available at lunchtimes  as a 'mini theatre', providing space for students  to showcase individual or group performances.  So far Room 2 has been a huge success! Last term we were lucky enough to have kicked off Room 2 performances with several VCE Drama music mime acts as well as performances from the teacher band, Saturday Detention, with numerous students collaborating with them.

Room 2 is easily accessible and  allows for more flexible use with instruments already  set up and ready to go, cutting back on prep time for performances. It provides a dynamic performance and rehearsal space, and another place to perform when the theatre is in use.

Looking forward, we hope to have plenty more acts and shows including music, acting, and dancing.

Contact the Drama Captains Kate Gerraty and Ryan Hook or Drama Teacher, Mr Hodkinson, if you wish to perform in Room 2 during our Lunchtime season.

Open Night Swing Band music performance

The Koonung Swing Band performed in the theatre for prospective students and their parents on Open Night. Led by the Koonung Music Captains Alexandra Forman and Cameron Owens, the band performed “Let’s Twist Again”, “Green Onions”, and “Blame it on the Bossa Nova”.  The band and the soloists performed excellently and each song received a great applause from the audience. Our role was to perform for parents as they were leaving to the theatre to go to the library. A great proportion of the audience remained to watch all four songs performed - this is a real testament to the skill and success of the Koonung Swing Band.

We are very lucky to have such talented people within our staffing cohort. Please read Sandy's interesting background :

Hi. My name is Sandy Angliss and I have been working 3 days per week at KSC since November 2016.

I am a Prep to Year 12 art teacher, an artist, an arts administrator and an arts technician. At KSC I enjoy working for the Arts Domain to assist where ever I can; administrative work, technician work and I have done some art teaching. I ran a ‘Felting Worksop’ for the senior Textile students last year. I also go on excursions to art exhibitions with the Koonung students and art teachers.  I have found all students to be respectful to people and curious about the world around them. They are a pleasure to work with.

My two sons came to KSC (Julian and Simon Castles, now ages 25 and 18 respectively) and this is why I chose to work here. I knew the staff at KSC to be very professional. I hoped the atmosphere was a calm place to work, and, I am pleased to report it is! I have found Koonung staff to be polite and very hardworking. They also know how to relax on Friday after work and to have a laugh.

Before I came to KSC, I worked for 22 years as an art teacher for children and adults with disabilities. I worked for 14 years as a Community Arts Teacher at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre, where I taught art to a group of talented adults with disabilities. I exhibited their work annually in and around the City of Whitehorse – in council chambers, libraries and the Box Hill Community Arts Centre’s art gallery.

I have been teaching since 1991, and I have  taught in a variety of settings; kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, colleges, hospitals, festivals, both in Australia and in Malaysia. I lived in Malaysia in 1996 with my husband and then 3 year old son (Julian). I taught etching to Diploma students at the Conservatory of Fine Arts  in Penang.  I made many Malaysian artist friends and we formed the International Women Artists Council in 1999 and we have exhibited together every two years in different countries. We have exhibited in Australia, UK, USA, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, China, Korea and, my favourite place so far, Mongolia. I highly recommend Mongolia to everyone as a place to travel. To me it was magical and majestic, and the Mongolian people are more than happy to show off their unique culture; art, story-telling, drama, singing, dancing, fashion and sports such as horse riding and outdoor wrestling etc. In 2019, our group of women will travel to Moscow, Russia, to exhibit together again. These group exhibitions can have up to 200 participants and we each exhibit one painting each, making it a  very large exhibition!

Three years ago my husband and I bought a cottage near Daylesford, in a place called Porcupine Ridge – near the hamlet of Glenlyon. There is a lovely General Store in Glenlyon that I recommend for good food and coffee if you are visiting the Central Highlands for a country drive.

In April 2018, I entered the “Paint Glenlyon 2018” art exhibition. It was held at the newly renovated Glenlyon Shire Hall, which was built in 1890. I decided to enter the “Paint Glenlyon 2018” as a way of getting to know some of the locals – and to this end, it worked, and I have made some new community-minded friends in the Glenlyon Progress Association and other community members who came to the art exhibition and live nearby.

I painted the view of Porcupine Ridge from my drive way on our property and I was surprised and delighted to win First Prize – my first ever art prize! One day, I hope to retire and live full time in Porcupine Ridge. It is a beautiful and restful place. A place where I can often hear friends and family say, ‘How’s the serenity!”.

Artist of the Week - Tahlia Vosnakis

Well done to Tahlia Vosnakis, 8D, who is this week's Artist of the Week. Tahlia was nominated for Artist of the Week by Visual Communication Design Teacher, Mr Stuart Rowe.

The Visual Communication Design - Street Scene task involves students  combining their knowledge of one-point perspective and rendering techniques to depict form within a context. Students render and blend layers of tone and utilise technical drawing conventions to create three dimensional views. Tahlia Vosnakis from 8D, has demonstrated a strong technical facility and attention to detail in her work. A considered use of fine-liner  has assisted Tahlia in portraying a sense of depth and hierarchy within the composition.

Summer at the Heidi MOMA

I enjoyed drawing this one-point perspective scene of the Heidi Museum because I had plenty of time over the holidays to add as much or as little as I liked to it. I drew the image on tracing paper and printed the line work out so that if I messed up with the colouring I could always print out another copy. Throughout this assignment I learned how to replicate different colours with realism and how to correctly use a vanishing point and a horizon line. It was challenging to draw the roof of the building and the stairs because they had a strange shape. Next time I might try and be more creative with it and include a theme for the people.
