Casey Migrant Art Project

On Tuesday 30 April, sixty students from Years 7 – 12 from migrant backgrounds, participated in two workshops as a lead in to the Casey Migrant Project.

The project is based on three major themes;

Bukjeh: the sack that people who are forced to leave their home use to carry their personal belongings

Rehle: the journey refugees take after leaving their country of origin

Kheimeh: represents the tent that refugees may find themselves living in once they reach a destination

The students were directed by Gabriela, Jose, Rania and Sasha, performing artists from the City of Casey.  The first workshop “Poetry in Motion” focused on students expressing a story through poetry and dance. The second workshop aimed to increase awareness of the self and environment through explorations of the body and voice in a performance.

It will be interesting to see how our students use these workshops and ideas to honour their migrant / refugee backgrounds which will be exhibited at Bunjil Place from Thursday 13 – Saturday 15 June.  More information on attending the exhibition will be available on the website and Facebook page closer to the date. This will be a free event, open to the public, and will include art work and performances over the three days. Hampton Park Secondary College is one of only two school in the City of Casey that have been invited to participate in this event.

Congratulations Farzana

Farzana Qasimi (Year 10) presented at the TEDxCasey event held at Bunjil Place on Sunday. 28 April.

Her talk “The Dark and Light of Social Media: The journey to surrounding ourselves with positivity and love online” contained relevant ideas and themes that can be applied by all in choosing how to use social media more productively to enhance our lives.

Her presentation was impressive, as she started her presentation in darkness, linking with her theme of dark and light.

Congratulations on your amazing presentation.

Sports Peer Mentors

The Sports Peer Mentors who were acknowledged in the last Newshamper have started working with their respective primary schools (River Gum, Hampton Park and Coral Park).

They will play an integral role in supporting the interschool sporting program, acting as important role models for the primary aged students and assisting in their transition from Grade 6 students into Year 7 students at Hampton Park Secondary College in 2020.

Thank you to the Sports Peer Mentors in taking on this responsibility.
