Assistant Principal's Report

As usual, students and teachers have hit the ground running in term two.

We started the term with some very poignant ANZAC Day assemblies, where we heard of the impact of war from our very own students and teachers, and from a speaker from the RSL who spoke of the supports offered to returned service men and women.

Parents and carers have had the opportunity to learn about their child’s progress at the Student Learning Conferences held in week two. We appreciate and highly value parent attendance at these conferences and the support you provide for your child’s learning. We look forward to continue working in partnership with you and to hearing your reflections on how your child is progressing.

Our Cross Country in Week Three was a great success and was a day blessed with beautiful weather.

This week Year 7 and 9 students have been involved in NAPLAN testing. These tests will not affect students’ school results and should be seen as an indicator of what students are able to achieve, in one test on one day. This provides some information to parents and carers about where their child’s current levels are in relation to national standards, though it is important to note that it is only one set of somewhat limited information, and there are so many other aspects of your child’s leaning to consider.

For Senior School students, the year seems to be flashing by. We are currently two thirds of the way through VCE Units 1 and 3, and Senior and Intermediate VCAL students have just completed their mid study progress interviews. As a participant in these interviews, I have been very impressed by the ability of VCAL students to reflect on their progress and show maturity and independence in their work placements and VET studies.

I am pleased to see so many students at the college meeting the challenges of studying hard, organising their time effectively, completing assessments, and committing to their learning goals. Year 12’s in particular are considering their options post-schooling in a visit to Monash University for TIS (Tertiary Information Session) and our senior EAL students have been involved in Taster VET courses at Chisolm.

On a personal note, I am taking two weeks leave at the end of term and want to wish students and staff all the best during the assessment and reporting period at the end of term; after which you will be looking forward to a well-earned rest!
