Principal's Message to the School Community

Return for P-2

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we awaited the arrival of the department's updated Operations Guide. It arrived in my inbox at 7:02 this morning and we have now been able to pull together in one communication below all the pieces of information that have trickled through to us over the last 48 hours.

A special pat on the back to all P-2 families who prepared their children so well this morning when they farewelled them at the gate. They have all settled into their classrooms with very large smiles on their face.

KPS Return to School Guidelines from Friday 10 September

The Victorian Government has announced changes to schooling in regional Victoria. Based on advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer, students in Prep to Grade 2 in regional Victoria (except for Greater Shepparton) will attend on-site from Friday 10 September.

The existing remote learning program will continue for other year levels, with on-site supervision only available for those students who were previously eligible for on-site supervision under the vulnerable children or children of authorised workers category. No additional students in Grades 3 to 6 will be able to attend on-site.

Visitors to school grounds is limited to essential school services and operations. This requires parents/carers to remain offsite and farewell their children each morning and pick them up at the end of the day using the access gates detailed below.

Site access/exit in the morning at 8:45 am and in the afternoon at 3:25 pm will be as follows:

  • Prep - 2 children to use the pedestrian gate on Edgecombe St before and after school.
  • Year 3-6 children to use the gate adjacent to the school crossing before and after school.
  • The rear gate adjacent to the Aquatic Centre will remain closed and children coming from that end of the school will need to use the community path and the Edgecombe St footpath to gain access to the appropriate gate as detailed above.

If your child arrives late to school or needs to be picked up during the day, please telephone the school using the number on the sign affixed to the Edgecombe St pedestrian gate.  A staff member will then be available to assist you.

Parents/carers of Year 3-6 children are permitted to briefly come onsite to pick up requested home learning packs wearing a face mask and using the provided hand sanitiser but not enter school buildings.

The school canteen will be open for lunch orders and snack food at recess and lunch. It is recommended that children under 12 years of age and students at primary school wear face masks when at school, or when attending an OHSC program.

We look forward to welcoming some classes back to face-to-face learning and will ensure that remaining year levels undertaking remote and flexible learning continue to be supported.

NAPLAN

In May this year our Year 3 and 5 students sat the NAPLAN national literacy and numeracy assessment. NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community against similar schools' state means and national standards.

The school received our students’ 2021 NAPLAN results yesterday and I was extremely pleased with the data. Our Year 3 student’s results were above the state mean in all areas which include Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy.

Our Year 5 students either met the state mean or were minimally below, with no area of significant concern.

These results are a testament to the collaborative efforts made by school staff and families especially considering the significant amount of time spent learning from home last year.

The school will further investigate these results to help:

-teachers to better identify students who need greater challenges or support

-identify strengths and areas of need in teaching programs

-set goals in literacy and numeracy.

If you are a parent/carer of a student who undertook the NAPLAN tests in May this year the school will soon mail to you an individual report of your child’s results.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s NAPLAN results, you should discuss these with your child’s teacher, who will have the best insight into your child’s educational progress.
