Community Engagement: Update
South Oakleigh College provides many opportunities for our local primary school students to experience a taste of secondary school. This term we were delighted to welcome the Grade 5 students from Oakleigh South Primary School and give them the opportunity to undertake learning activities in Science, Music, PE, the Small Lab, and the TV Studio. The enthusiasm displayed by the students is immense and, as South Oakleigh staff, we thoroughly enjoy having them at our school.
Unfortunately, due to the lockdown, we had to postpone the rest of the program to later in the year.
Steve Kuruc and Lony Hem, two of our experience maths and science teachers also held a 5-week after-school program available to all of our local Grade 5 students. These programs were so popular that they were full within 24 hours of being advertised. We look forward to providing more of these after-school programs next Term.
Last month, I accompanied two of our College Captains, Nishtha Patel and Billy Waterston, to a Rotary Club dinner where they presented to the Rotarians a snapshot of the student-leadership structure at our school and the various ways that Rotary support our students, such as through the weekly Breakfast Club. Nishtha and Billy should be proud of their presentation and spent a considerable amount of time answering questions from the very engaged Rotarians.
Enrichment Clubs
2021 has seen the creation of a huge range of enrichment clubs that are open to all of our students. Many of the clubs are held at lunchtimes, with others in the morning before school starts and other clubs after school.
Clubs currently operating include Chess Club every Friday lunchtime in the library where students of all ages pit their skills on the chess board against one another. The Debating Club is held every Wednesday and Friday at lunchtime, requiring two different sessions due to its popularity. Our Girls in STEM Club is held every Thursday at lunchtime and gives our girls the opportunity to explore the very current topics of science, maths, engineering and maths. And of course the TV Studio Club held every Wednesday at lunchtime in our very unique Television Studio lets our students explore their creative talents using the greenscreen to shoot various clips.
We encourage all students to join up to any club.
