Careers Update

Cath Freney, Careers and Future Pathways Coordinator

Our Year 12 students have now completed their VTAC applications and many of them are currently applying for cadetships and early entry programs. It has been wonderful to hear of students being successful in gaining early entry places to the Australian National University in Canberra, Federation University, Australian Catholic University, Collarts and Holmesglen TAFE in Melbourne.

RSA Course

An important part of the new Career 4sight Program at Shelford is offering opportunities for students to gain different qualifications. In line with this, we are offering Year 11 and 12 students, staff and parents the opportunity to take part in an RSA course (Responsible Service of Alcohol).

The course will be run online on 13 October from 4.30–8.30pm. It will cost $65 and you can register at the link below. There is a minimum attendance of 15 required for the course to proceed.

The skills young people will need for the green jobs of the future

The United Nations Environment Programme has developed GEO-6 for Youth – a guide to some of the sustainable career choices that students can make. It also highlights some of the key skills students will need in these positions. These include:

  • Science skills – key roles will include environmental scientists, biologists, hydrologists and biochemists.
  • Architectural and planning skills – Architects and planners will design buildings that are more energy efficient.
  • Green engineering and tech skills – green engineers will be designing using green economy technology.
  • Agriculture skills – with our food and farming industries becoming more sustainable here will be growing jobs in organic and urban farming and precision agriculture.
  • Environmental justice skills – Workers in this field will combine both human and environmental rights.
  • Systems skills – Skills in macroeconomics and other systems will be used in jobs focused on building sustainability into infrastructure projects.
