Wellbeing and Connections

Having strong social connections can help students at school and home.  A lack of human connection can be harmful to your physical and mental health!

Today, we all lead busy lives, and it can be hard to balance everything.  Often, our social connections fall by the wayside.  But connecting with others is more important than you might think.

Social connection can:

  • Lower anxiety and depression
  • Help us regulate our emotions
  • Lead to higher self-esteem and empathy
  • Improve our immune systems

Evidently, there are many benefits to having strong social connections!  But while technology seems to connect us more than ever, it disconnects us from nature, ourselves, and others. Having human connection can look different for each person.  And if you’re not sure where to start in finding meaningful connection, that’s okay.

Here are some ideas to help you out:

  • Join a new club, or try out a group activity
  • Reach out to an old friend you’ve lost touch with
  • Volunteer for a cause you care about
  • Eat lunch in a communal space
  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours
  • Ask someone for help when you need it
  • Do a random act of kindness

ANZAC Day

As we celebrate ANZAC day, it is important to remember those brave men and women who fought for our country.  On April 25th 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula.  These became known as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this day. This day brings us together as a community and country allowing us to connect with others on this day of remembrance.

Helping Hands

Starting next week (Term 2, Week 2), Helping Hands is returning.  We have almost 40 of our Senior students involved in this leadership program.  Each day during recess there will be a group of three to five leader students running activities and supporting other students in the yard.  These students will be working from the Wellbeing Garden (the area between the courts, Canteen, PAC and Library).  They will have equipment for games and will run activities, but students can also go to them if they have a question or concern and they will help.  If any student is struggling to find a friend, or something to do during recess, they can go to Helping Hands and one of our leader students will support/ encourage/ include them.  Thank you to all our Senior leader students giving up recess time to help others.

If there are any further questions about the Helping Hands program please reach out to Cheyenne or Kelly Gommers.
