Personal Narrative Texts

During this unit of study, students will engage with personal narratives. Students will be able to make connections to their own lives in order to understand what they are reading. Students focus on maintaining fluency and form mental images using their five senses. They will analyse to begin to identify how a personal narrative follows a chronological sequence and has true information about the author.

Personal Narrative Texts (Recounts)

Students will understand that a personal narrative is a story about their own life, experience or memory. Students will craft a personal narrative with the assistance of mentor texts. They will be able to create a book about themselves including their feelings, thoughts and actions along with illustrations to engage their audience.

Becoming a rational counter

(Week 1-2)

Becoming a rational counter, using counting strategies and understanding numbers 1-20 and beyond.

Cardinal, ordinal, and nominal numbers

(Weeks 3)

Understanding the different representations or meanings of number and using number in context.

Identifying the attribute length (distance or height). Using direct and indirect comparisons

(Weeks 4-5)

Developing the concept of a unit (unitisation), iteration, comparison, and mathematical language.

Measuring the attribute of area (covering) and using units to measure this new attribute

(Weeks 6)

Using counting and addition to determine lengths, perimeters, heights, region areas etc and assigning a number to a measurement.

Modelling addition and subtraction

(Weeks 7-9)

Developing the concept of addition and subtraction through activities that use various materials, visuals, mental strategies, and other domains such as measurement (length).

MY FAMILY & FRIENDS

In this unit students will explore communication and relationships between family and friends. They will learn ways to seek help from both family members and friends and will explore events which build relationships between family and friends such as family celebrations, cultural events and sharing time together. They will also investigate safety both in the household, school and community and ways to seek help in these settings.

Narrative texts

Students will continue to increase their reading stamina by reading a variety of narrative texts and make predictions about events in the text. They summarise by thinking about important parts of the text and demonstrate the ability to make connections and infer using evidence in the text. Students analyse texts by noticing a range of characteristics.

Narrative texts

Students will increase their writing stamina by experimenting with narrative writing. They will generate ideas for writing through shared language experiences and looking at other authors' craft. They will become more confident to have a go and less afraid of making mistakes as they build independence.

Addition and subtraction

(Weeks 1-2)

Revising meanings for the two operations. Explore mental strategies, estimation, and number sentences. They use a range of materials to show their thinking.

Identifying, classifying, and describing 2 dimensional figures and 3 dimensional objects

(Weeks 3-4)

Looking into properties of shapes and solids and classifying shapes and solids into groups which link to their features or characteristics. They construct familiar solids using materials and bocks, and they compose familiar figures using various shapes.

Fractions as part-whole

(Weeks 5-6)

Looking into the part-whole construct using geometric figures (region models), equal partitioning and understanding the role of the numerator and denominator.

Measuring, comparing, and calculating the attributes of length and area (weeks 7-9)

Understanding how to use uniform informal units. Estimating measures and comparing measures and calculating measurements using additive and multiplicative reasoning.

KEEPING SAFE

In this unit students will investigate safety in the home, school, and community. They will learn to identify safe and unsafe situation and ways they can communicate both to others. They will investigate people who help to keep them safe, including people in the local community such as police, fire, and ambulance officers. They will explore their own responsibilities in ensuring their safety and the safety of others. They will make the connection that rules can help to keep them safe.

Narrative Texts (historical fiction)

Students will continue to increase their reading stamina by reading a variety of texts containing a range of features. They will demonstrate the ability to maintain fluency to understand the text. They will ask questions of the text and author as well as make informed predictions and share their learning. Students will summarise by understanding the important parts of the text.

Narrative (historical fiction)

Students will increase their writing stamina by experimenting with historical fiction writing. They will generate ideas for writing using their Writer’s Notebook and through shared language experiences using mentor books.

Place value, addition, and subtraction

(Weeks 1-2)

Developing basic facts, mental strategies, and exploring word problems which are connected to materials, arithmetic statements and number sentences.

Multiplication and division

(Weeks 3-6)

Developing basic facts, mental strategies and exploring word problems which connect with the standard written algorithm, materials, and visuals.

Geometry

(Weeks 7-9)

Learn about the properties of shapes and solids through drawings and construction activities. They explore symmetry and perform different transformations on shapes to make pictures/images.

GETTING A FAIR GO

In this unit students explore the concept of ‘being fair’ in different real-life contexts, including school, home, sport and society. Students will learn the difference between a rule and a law. They will examine scenarios where rules and laws, as well as people’s actions, create either fair or unfair situations and explore the need for rules in society. They identify the three levels of government, including states, territories, and local councils. Students investigate why/how rules or local laws change and the process and reasons for these changes. Students will explore what a government is and laws at a local level, by focusing on the rules and laws of a local place or service.

Students explore narrative writing and use evidence to predict and revise their predictions before, during and after reading. They analyse and critique texts and ask questions of the text and writer to understand genre and content more deeply.

(Weeks 1-2)

Looking into factors, prime numbers, and polygonal numbers.

Place value and the metric system

(Weeks 3-6)

Patterns in the base 10 number system large and small numbers

Fractions and decimals

(Week 7-8)

Comparing, developing benchmarks, and exploring equivalence.

Probability

(Week 9)

Conducting experiments and representing data on various graphs.

WHOSE IN CHARGE?

In this unit students will explore federation, democracy and the development of government. Students will learn how governments were formed in Australia and how that effects the current government. Students will investigate the different roles within government and how they effect in organizing and running Australia. They will examine how the government is portrayed in the media and how that affects people’s opinions. They will develop understandings about the role and responsibilities of the media in providing balanced information to the public. They will explore the rights and responsibilities of people as citizens in a democracy.
