Our musicians out and about in the community

The Easter holidays this year was an exciting time for band musicians from NCS. Micah E travelled to the National Band Championships in Newcastle which won the Junior C Grade competition. Back in Nowra, at the Term 1 “Enchanted” concert for the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra it was fantastic to see Sarah A perform classical and modern orchestral scores. At the same event Jairus and Bethany D played their violins for the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra Junior Strings.

It has been my pleasure to see students from NCS take their talents beyond the school setting over the last eight years. As the current president of the Shoalhaven City Concert Band it is important to see that there is a renewal of people participating in the musical and other performing arts in our community.

As a primary school trained teacher I also see that when students take their first steps into the outside world they have not reached their full potential. This is true for other key learning areas as well. When we ask children to make their first purchase they are not ready to be fiscally responsible. When reading the Bible at church we do not expect that every name is read correctly. We continue in faith that they will be capable as they continue to participate and we encourage them despite the difficulties they face.

Learning an instrument takes commitment and patience. Similar to other areas of learning at school it may not come naturally at first. Music has a language. Music has symbols to interpret, and mathematical precision. There is a science to producing the sounds of different instruments and how they fit together in a band or orchestra. When music is played together we listen to the different voices of the band sections and celebrate the product of our combined efforts.

Let us continue encouraging NCS students that are currently performing publicly and also those that are developing their talents in band, choir and drama at NCS and in the community.

Year 7 Student of the Week

Our Year 7 Student of the Week is Joshua C. Qualities of enthusiasm for all activities, eagerness to help, and caring for others are a credit to him and a blessing to the school. Congratulations Josh.
