LANGUAGES

At the end of term 3, we farewelled the Yamawaki exchange students from Japan. Anne, Yui, Kanon and Kisaki spent a brilliant term with us here at Academy. We hope that it was a very enriching experience for them. It certainly was for our students!

The year 10 Japanese class organised a farewell party and, although there were a few tears shed, we all had a lovely time listening to some K-pop tunes and enjoying a delicious spread.

A special thank you to their Japanese teacher, Karen Fogarty and to all the students and teachers who welcomed the Yamawaki students so warmly.  Aisha Vinnie, Sandy Hoang, Nina Vuong and Madeline Wilson were outstanding buddies.

DEBATING

The Debating season for 2022 is complete and we congratulate Florencia Herrera on coming equal first place and winning a Swannie Award for her grade in our Essendon region.

The Swannie Awards are awarded to the speaker in each region and grade who has the highest average speaker score after completing at least three debates during the year.

On Friday night, October 7th, the award winners and their families gathered at Methodist Ladies College to celebrate this achievement.

Debating Award recipient: Congratulations Florencia Herrera of Yr 9

McAULEY RESOURCE CENTRE

Members of the RAGE and Senior Book Club attended the Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF) at the Capitol Theatre at the end of Term 3.

MWF gathers some of Australia’s most essential voices in children’s and young adult literature to delight and inspire students. We heard four authors on the day (Rhiannon Wilde, Vanessa Len, Tobias Madden and CS Pacat) speaking to a broad range of topics, including storytelling and cultures, friendship, identity, family, and creativity. The featured authors combined thoughtful consideration of complex ideas with an excitement for the life-changing power of books and stories. The Academy Book Clubbers gained much and were a buzz  with excitement about the process of writing and reading the authors’ books.

As part of our Book Week activities Ms Salvo ran some book folding demonstrations.   Sophie Nikolarakos (7 Silver) continued working on her creation at home.  She kindly sent us a photo of her finished masterpiece.  Well done, Sophie, your book folding is amazing!

Happy Reading
