Premier’s Reading Challenge

2022 concluded at the end of August. Congratulations to students who completed the Challenge and had their reading records validated. In total, 241 students in the following year groups successfully read the required number of books during the past year (and earned House points for the Peter Green Cup):

  • 40 students in Kindergarten
  • 43 students in Year 1
  • 20 students in Year 2
  • 26 students in Year 3
  • 30 students in Year 4
  • 32 students in Year 5
  • 23 students in Year 6
  • 15 students in Year 7
  • 6 students in Year 8
  • 6 students in Years 9-10

Amongst the displays created in the Dr Ian Grant Library during Term 3 was one for Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week which occurred August 20-26. This year’s theme was “Dreaming with Eyes Open”. Junior School students explored this idea through the reading of many of the shortlisted books and completing various associated activities during their visits to the Library throughout the week. Stanley House included the option of dressing as your favourite book character in their House Day the following week. We saw a range of imaginative costumes as students from both the Junior and Secondary Schools visited the Library that day.

CBCA Book of the Year winners were:

  • The Book of the year: Older readers - Tiger Daughter by Rebecca Lim
  • The Book of the year: Younger readers - A Glasshouse of Stars by Shirley Marr
  • The Book of the year: Early childhood - Jetty Jumping by Andrea Rowe, ill. Hannah Sommerville
  • The Picture book of the year - Iceberg by Jess Racklyeft, text Claire Saxby
  • The Eve Pownall Award (books which have the prime intention of documenting factual material) - Still Alive, Notes from Australia's Immigration Detention System by Safdar Ahmed
  • CBCA Award for new illustrator - The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name by Michelle Pereira, text Sandhya Parappukkaran.

These books, as well as the other shortlisted books, are available to borrow  from the Dr Ian Grant Library.

In Term 3 we have been focusing on assisting students to develop their referencing skills using APA version 7. While completing a recent assignment, Year 7 Mathematics classes participated in information sessions that allowed them to gain an understanding of referencing in this style. A reminder to all students that you have access to a Library, Research & Information Skills google classroom for your particular year group which contains relevant information, resources and references for the subjects and assignments you are completing. Any student who has not joined this classroom should email Ms Mikelans (vanessa.mikelans@trac.nsw.edu.au) for details or ask their classroom teacher for the code.

Joining the Wagga Wagga City Library is one way students can access reliable information, including a range of online academic databases, for their assignment work. Any student without a library card can make contact with Ms Mikelans for help in becoming a local library member and utilising these resources.
