Learning Centre One

Welcome back to Term 4! We have had a very exciting first two weeks back at school. The prep students went on their first school excursion to the Werribee Mansion. They got to see many different things around the mansion, such as the laundry, toy room and dining room. They even got to see a special teacup with a moustache protector to help men keep their moustache dry. Thank you to all of the parent helpers that came on the excursion with us.

In literacy, students have been learning all about nonfiction texts. They have been practicing their writing, focusing specifically on identifying the parts of an animal and using these words the create sentences.

In maths we are learning about collecting data and got to use M&Ms in a graphing activity, YUM! There were a few M&Ms that got eaten before they could be graphed, but the prep students did a great job seeing which colour M&M they had the most of and least of in their packet.

We are looking forward to the school's Multicultural Day next Friday. A reminder that students are asked to dress in their cultural dress or the colours of their flag on the day. We look forward to seeing you at the Multicultural Day mass at 9am.

Learning Centre Two

LITERACY

We have begun the term by looking at an author we first experienced in Term 1. William Joyce has written many wonderful books and last week we read 'The Mischievians'. They are a collection of creatures who are responsible for all things that annoy us - itches on our backs, lost TV remotes and boogers hanging out of our noses. The students enjoyed this book very much and had a go at creating their own Mischievian during writing lessons. This week and next we are going to read 'A Day with Wilbur Robinson', also by William Joyce.

MATHS

Our focus, this week, has been on the area of Chance. We have been using vocabulary to describe the chance of an event happening, for example; it is impossible for the Preps to be in Year 6 next year or it is likely that it will rain tomorrow. The students have designed their own spinners and have used tally marks and graphs to record the outcome of their spins.

RELIGION

The students have been reflecting on what it means to love one another as Jesus loves us. We are thinking about what this means for the way we interact with others around us and also to consider how we can be of service to others in the wider community.

INQUIRY

We are very excited to be heading out on an excursion next week to the Immigration Museum. We will learn about the many groups of people who have travelled to Australia as migrants and also about how our Indigenous Australians were impacted by these changes. We will also spend time at the Sandridge Bridge, built in 1888, and learning about the history of Enterprize Park.

We would all like to welcome Dasanthi as the newest staff member to join the LC2 team and we wish Cheryl all the best as she heads out to LC4!

Learning Centre Three

Term 4 is off to a great start with the students settling back really well. They have shown great resilience with our Specialist day swap over these two weeks. They have enjoyed sharing their holiday stories and were happy to see their friends again.

The students have been exploring the persuasive genre in their Reading and Writing. After reading the text, “I Wanna Iguana”, the students used the text to write a persuasive letter to their parents, requesting a pet of their own.

In Maths we have started the term by exploring number patterns. The students are using a variety of strategies to explore Multiplication and Division. We have had fun creating a flower array to show multiplication using arrays.

Through Inquiry this Term, we will be exploring History. The students have begun their family tree, including their names and that of their parents, along with their birth year and country of birth. Thank you for your support in completing the form sent home to inform your children about their family tree details. We are all looking forward to our Excursion to the Werribee Mansion to explore the history of this iconic building.

We have commenced Term 4 Religion, learning about the images of God as Shepherd, Potter, Father and Mother as depicted in the Scripture. Once again, we will be committed to the Socktober Challenge to support the needs of children in developing countries.

Learning Centre Four

In LC4, we have been looking at poetry in Literacy and Area, Perimeter & Coordinates in Maths.

We have written a range of poems including Haiku, Diamante, Ballads, Limericks and Acrostic. The 5/6 students have thrived creating rhyming poems and working on counting syllables.

During Maths, we have been working out the perimeter of different shapes as well as changing a shape to notice how the area will not change but the perimeter will. This last week we have started working on coordinates, plotting the coordinate points onto a graph to uncover a picture. Once again the students have enjoyed this process of learning, extending their knowledge of Maths.
