Magis report

Firstly, a warm welcome back to all. It is sure to be another busy and exciting term for our Magis program. Only a couple of days in, and already preparation is well underway for Term 4 competitions. Our College Chess Tournament will commence on Monday – with students from Years 7-12 competing for the title of College Grandmaster. Also, next week is the World Scholars Cup – our teams will be researching, discussing, and debating science, art, music, history, literature, and more. We look forward to hearing about their experience at the Tournament in next week’s newsletter.

An integral part of our College values is the ‘service for others’ – and it is wonderful to witness our senior school students demonstrate these values through their leadership and mentoring of our lower school students. Year 10 student Thomas Syminton visited the Year 7 Magis Option classes earlier in the week - offering guidance, encouragement, and support to our Junior Debaters. Year 7 student, Sarah Stewart said:

'Usually, I’m shy with speaking in front of an audience, but Tom has inspired me to become more comfortable and confident with public speaking. I know that when the day of the debate arrives, I’ll be fine because the advice Tom has given me will serve me well.'

Earlier today, our Senior Ethics Team shared lunch and conversation with our Junior Ethics Teams. The junior school students were excited to learn from the best – our Senior Team having recently come 3rd in the International Ethics Olympiad.

Magis - Opportunities to do more!

UN Voice Competition

Voice is the largest public speaking competition in Western Australia. This annual program is an exciting opportunity for students in Years 7 to 10 to broaden their knowledge of national and international affairs, while developing their presentation and public speaking skills in a unique forum. For further information please see the Magis Coordinator.

Raise Our Voice in Parliament

Raise Our Voice Australia has partnered with over 70 federal politicians, who have agreed to use one of their 90 second speaking slots to read a speech written by a young person aged 21 or under from their electorate. Speeches should answer the prompt "What do you want to see from Australia's new parliament?" Speech submissions close on 19 October 2022. If you are 21 or under or know someone who is, please head to www.raiseourvoiceaustralia.com/youthvoice to access speech templates, check out the participating politicians, and submit a speech.
