s a parent of a Year 7 student, NAPLAN has been a topic of conversation in the past week in our household. It’s always much easier to be the educator giving objective advice, but as a parent, with NAPLAN commencing for Year 7 and Year 9 students next week, I’ve become very conscious of the importance for us all to keep perspective and not let the experience cause excessive angst for our children. NAPLAN is just one aspect of the College’s assessment and reporting processes. It doesn’t replace ongoing assessments and judgements made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress. We know that for some students, assessments such as NAPLAN generate genuine worry and fear that they won’t do well. Reassuring them that NAPLAN is part of their broader school program and is an opportunity to demonstrate their learning strengths can be helpful in normalising the experience of the next couple of weeks. Some other strategies to help reduce the ‘NAPLAN nerves’ include:
- Ensure that students get a good night’s sleep and have a wholesome breakfast so that they have the energy to perform at their best.
- Eliminate external stressors on the day so that students can focus on feeling organised, calm and ready. Avoid rushing in the morning, help them get to school on time and remain calm and centred yourself to minimise any nervous energy they might pick up on.
- Encourage them to read the question carefully to avoid silly or rushed errors.
- Focus on the important things: students’ long-term learning is more important overall than any isolated test, NAPLAN or otherwise. Remind them that whatever the outcome, their personal best and continuous improvement over time is the most important thing.
Wishing all students and parents the very best for the coming weeks in keeping NAPLAN in check.

Year 12 art incursions
Last week, Year 12 ATAR Visual Arts Students participated in a painting incursion with Western Australian artist Desiree Crossing. Desiree is a contemporary realist painter who specialises in portraiture. Desiree shared with students valuable skills in working with oil paint focusing on tone and temperature to create a dynamic portrait painting.

National Schools Constitutional Convention
Congratulations to Year 12 Politics and Law students, Harry Court and Yvie Rigg, who have been selected to attend the 2023 National Schools Constitutional Convention as student delegates, representing Western Australia. This is an outstanding achievement and a wonderful opportunity for Harry and Yvie to hear from expert speakers and learn about constitutional reform. The Convention will be held in Canberra later this month - and this will be the first year Western Australian representatives will attend the event in person since the pandemic, with the last two years of delegates attending the Convention over Zoom. In 2019, Charlie Richards, then a Year 12 student at our College, attended as a WA delegate. Charlie is now in his penultimate year of a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Notre Dame University.
Last week, Charlie met for breakfast Harry and Yvie to share his experience at the Convention and to offer advice to our students prior to their departure.
'When I attended the Convention in 2019, I was given a unique opportunity to explore the question of whether Indigenous Australians should be recognised in the preamble of the Constitution. I hope that Harry and Yvie have an amazing time and soak everything up!'
'We are so lucky to have such an extensive community of high-achieving alumni who are willing to share their experiences with us,' said Yvie. 'Charlie’s insights into the program that Harry and I can look forward to were interesting and helpful, particularly regarding the friends he made and the special opportunities available to the attendees.'
'I’m so grateful to be given the chance along with Yvie and the other WA delegates to represent our views,' said Harry. 'In class, we have learnt about the importance of a diverse range of voices in a liberal democracy so to be able to practise this in real life is such an exciting opportunity.'
We thank Charlie for taking time out of his busy schedule – and we wish Harry and Yvie the very best at the Convention. We look forward to hearing about their experience upon their return.
