3/4L Session 2

                                      3/4L

Last Wednesday, 3/4L spent the last hour in the garden seed sorting and planting. The Rotten Pickle Squad and The Little Chilli Pickles worked together to sow five rows of carrot seed with Allesha.

They were amazed at how tiny a carrot seed is. We made shallow rows, carefully sprinkled seed in the row, gently covered them with a thin layer of soil and patted it down, gave the soil a light watering to dampen it and finally covered each row with a fence paling which stops the sun shining directly on the soil and drying it out. Once we see the little carrots shooting up from the soil, we will remove the fence paling. The groups even had enough time to pick some carrots that were ready which allowed them to see the whole circle from tiny seed to big, long crunchy carrots. The GG's worked with Kartrina, planting broad beans. They tried 2 different planting methods; a row of broad bean seed planted directly into the garden bed soil and ;single broad bean seeds each planted into a small cardboard roll where they will grow until they're about 5cm tall, then will be transplanted into the garden bed.

The birds love pecking the fresh bean shoots as they emerge from the soil, so the broad bean seeds in carboard rolls (usually) get a better start without being pecked by birds at or eaten by snails. The Daisy Group and The Big Pickle Planters worked together with Tash, Bianca and Shev, to sort out dried bean seed and collect sunflower seed to package up and share.

The varying colours, shapes and sizes of the bean seeds amazed the students, with on student commenting they had never seen anything like it before. With the zucchinis coming to the end of their season we shared some delicious Zucchini and Lemon Cupcakes to end our session.

Thank you to the wonderful Mums who helped in the garden.
