Achilles Community Report

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This has been an exciting month in our learning journey! Students have explored many new concepts in all subjects across the curriculum. We would like to thank all of the families for being supportive with the students learning this month. It is great to see the students come together and show pictures of their garden. We would also like to thank all of the families for donating seeds/plants for our Inquiry unit. The students enjoyed planting the seeds and we look forward to watching them grow.

Reading

In Reading, students have been working on understanding what a procedural text is. Students were exposed to the different types of procedural texts such as; recipes, instruction manuals, etc. Students investigated the structure of a procedural text as they worked on unjumbling a variety of procedural texts.

Writing

In Writing, students have been working on procedural texts with the focus on the structure and language used. Through experiences, students have made plans then drafted a procedural text applying their knowledge of the structure and language used. Students have been learning how to use diagrams with labels to support their procedural text.

Maths

During Maths, we have been focusing on the concept of length. Students have begun measuring things. We started by looking at what we could measure with and how do we know if it is accurate or not. Students used unifix blocks, icy pole sticks, rulers and counters to measure objects in the classroom. With our awesome measuring skills we then tried measuring each other using all the different types of equipment within the classroom.

Inquiry

Our healthy eating program began looking at healthy foods and what foods are sometimes food and why. We examined the amount of sugar that is in some of our favourite drinks and foods by teaspoons of sugar. We moved onto why we need healthy food and how it affects our body and what to put into a healthy lunch box for maximum energy and concentration, this then moved onto exercise and how foods fuel our bodies and why we need exercise in our lives. We have also explored how to grow our own food. Students have planted seeds and we'll watch them grow in the coming weeks.

SEL

Students are learning about being ready to learn. This helps and shows the students how to identify when they aren’t ready and make a connection to a feeling that might be stopping them. They then drew what it looks like to them when they aren’t ready to learn all the way up to being ready to learn.
