Luna Community Report
Term 1, 2023
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It has been an exciting and busy month for our students and school. We have delved deeper in to learning routines and what focused learning looks like. Students have been introduced to new learning in Maths, Reading and Writing and we can see them growing in confidence in themselves everyday.
Reading
In Reading we have read and explored many procedural books, which we have thoroughly enjoyed. The books include 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth', 'Caring for your Lion', 'How to Care for your Grandma' and 'Scaredy Squirrel makes a friend'. These books made us laugh and let us practise our skills of predicting, text features, word choice and making connections. Ask your child what their favourite text was.
Writing
In Writing we have investigated procedural writing, where you teach your reader to do something. Students identified things they could make, do, and be. We have made pasta bracelets and our own version of 'Wombat Stew'. Students have really enjoyed immersing themselves in hands on tasks before writing their procedure for what they did.
Maths
In maths this term we have explored length and introduced chance and data.
In the unit of length we have investigated what is length, and used some materials like string, unfix blocks, icy pole sticks, even our hand spans to measure the length of various objects.
In the unit of chance and data, we learned about what is chance and explored some events that may or may not occur, if they are certain to occur or impossible to occur. Then we went on learning about what to do with the data from events that occur by chance. We learned how to create theoretical question, how to collect data, how to record it and how to represent it using pictographs and bar graphs. We finally learned how to interpret the data we collected.
Inquiry
In the unit of inquiry about healthy eating and healthy bodies, we learned about how being active helps us with being well balanced. We also discusses how sleeping affects our health and that having a good sleep routine is helping with our balanced life. The students have brainstormed ways of helping them going to sleep which are meditating, deep breathing, reading and listening to music before bed.
SEL
In our SEL classes we are learning about kindness and how we can brighten peoples days by being kind to others. We discussed how kindness spreads, when we are kind to others, the people we meet become happy and pass on the kindness to the people they meet too. We also celebrated Harmony Day and discussed multiculturalism and diversity. We looked at greetings and listened to stories from around the world.
