FETE

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

Friday is fast approaching and we need all the help we can get to run three successful stalls! We are asking for you to spare half an hour to help out, which may include assisting with the set up, pack up and running of the stall - many hands make light work. We also still need a few parent helpers to help with keeping sponges clean and hygienic for face painting with Liz in the Art room. If a time doesn't suit your child/children’s class please feel free to help out one of the other Scotsburn classes. We would appreciate any help, and it is a super fun event to be involved in!

Please click on the link below to access the roster and sign up.

Friday Late Start

A reminder that due to the Fete on Friday, we have a shortened school day, from 12pm to 3.30pm. We will run the day as normal at the Scotsburn Campus, and have a shortened Family Groups session from 12pm - 1pm. Please have a look below for which family group your child is in and the activity that they will be doing this week. Due to the shortened day, we won't be able to fit in a formal assembly this week.

Toastie Tuesdays!!!

Today was our first Toastie Tuesday, and they were flying out the door! Don’t forget your $1 each Tuesday for a beaut toastie!

Pancake Day!

For a bit of fun last Tuesday we celebrated Pancake Day with an impromptu cook up at lunchtime. It was great to use some of our freshly produced eggs, and the students loved them (the teachers did also!).

Interhouse Athletics Day

Our interhouse athletics day for Grade 3-6 students is on next Tuesday (7th March). This is always a great day, full of fun and excitement. On the day, we will start and finish at the Buninyong campus, where we will then bus to and from the Llanberris Athletics Track. Later this week and on Monday next week, we will remind students (particularly or new students) which house they are in so that they know which colours to wear on the day. A reminder that the canteen will not be open on the day, so please remember to pack lots of food and drink.

Western Bulldogs Reading Program

Last Friday, James in SC3 was lucky enough to attend the first Western Bulldogs Read Program day at the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility. The program has a focus on building reading capacity through instining students to read. James absolutely loved the session and is very proud to be selected as part of the program. Great work James!

Supporting Your Child’s Reading at Home

Please see this week’s full school newsletter in the Teaching & Learning section for some helpful home reading tips. All teachers at Scotsburn really value our home reading connection between school and families. If you have any questions around how to best support your child’s reading, please always reach out.

Sounds-Write Training

Buninyong Prep - Grade 2 staff are lucky enough to be undertaking a training course called ‘Sounds-Write’. This is a phonics based programme that allows students to understand how sounds are represented by the writing system. This course runs from Week 5 - Week 8 and will take both Mrs Robinson and Mrs Anderson out of the classroom on Fridays. The wonderful Mrs Micallef will be in SC1 while the training course is on.

Lunchtime Club

Lunchtime Club has kicked off with a bang in 2023, with lots of creative play happening in the shed. Last week we repurposed some old boxes, which were turned into “tiny homes”. A few boys even made an “off the grid” house, complete with solar panels! Thanks heaps to Gaye, as well as Raquel and Erin for coordinating this wonderful program.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

The clever Prep/Ones had another fabulous week! Students participated in their first music lesson with Mr Skilbeck and had a wonderful time singing and keeping beat as they got to know each other. In Reading, we continued the week learning about rhyming words. This week we are learning to segment words (pull words apart). In Writing, we are beginning our journey around learning to create and write a narrative (personal memoir). In Maths, we are continuing to learn about place value and collections. Our Integrated Topic ‘My Family’ has continued to be a focus in sharing information around our families as well as food and activities we enjoy as a family. Just a reminder that it would be wonderful to have our family photo and baby photos in asap.

Have a great week and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Fete Friday night.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

SC2 has embarked on many new learnings over the duration of week 5! Students have continued to work hard on skimming and scanning for literal information within texts. Students have been able to identify keywords from within literal questions that will assist them with skimming and scanning back through the text for the relevant information.

In Maths, students have commenced Maths groups, differentiating their tasks for place value.

Students have also commenced drafting their alien narratives! There have been some terrific introductions created at the end of last week that are to set up some exciting, suspenseful stories.

SC2 have also been creating advertisements for the SC2 photo booth at the Fete, which we can’t wait for!!!

Have a great week!

Mitch.

SC3 Learning Snapshot

SC3 has had another brilliant week in the classroom and all students in the class should be commended on the wonderful learning behaviours, particularly during explicit teaching time. As you know, we have started the year with a big focus on the new school values, and from this the class finalised our 2023 SC3 class trademarks. These trademarks below, were created by the students and represent how they want to operate as a class. It is amazing to see such maturity and ownership from the students.

In Reading this week, we began working on our Predicting skills, looking at what it takes to make accurate predictions, as well as how making predictions assists our reading comprehension. We have also begun to read and explore our class novel “Wonder”, which is a perfect text to develop our concept of “Choosing Kind”.

We absolutely can’t wait for the Fete on Friday, with our Pulled Pork Stand well into the preparation phase. Our stand will be out the front of the canteen area at Buninyong, and if you are yet to sign up for a 30 minute volunteer spot please click on the link above or let me know a time that you could help. We are expecting to see quite a few!

Have another brilliant week,

Jarrod

Specialist News

Physical Education

In Physical Education SC1 have been learning about playing games with simple rules. Throughout these games students have been developing their ability to work in a team, listen to instructions and take turns.

SC2 and SC3 have been focusing on the unit of athletics. During this unit students have been developing and refining the skills of sprinting, jumping and long distance running.

Performing Arts

SC1 has been focusing on puppetry. Students have made their own puppets and used them as well as other hand puppets to make puppet shows.

In SC2 and SC3 students have been learning about impromptu acting. We have been using facial expressions, body language and dialogue to express an emotion throughout our performances.

Japanese

As part of our goal to promote students’ voice and agency, all SC3 students have each nominated one common classroom phrase to learn to speak in Japanese language, which they will then be in charge of coaching the rest of the class (including me!) to learn and use as regularly as possible at school. We were so lucky to have のりこ せんせい (Noriko Sensei) to workshop our ideas with, so as each student selected their chosen words/phrase, のりこ せんせい was able to provide support and coaching on correct pronunciation as well as assistance in writing the phrase for our classroom display. Our Usagi Doshi (Year of the Rabbit) artworks have come in handy to complement our class display, and we are looking forward to producing a class video featuring the artworks and student narrations of their saying as a tool for regular exposure and practice. のりこ せんせい’s one-to-one assistance will be a fantastic support to ensure correct pronunciation on this video resource. How lucky are we?

Art - Clay tiles

Last year, SC2 and SC3 students began making some clay tiles to install on the reinforcement mesh on the side of the art room. After running into the snag of having an out-of-service Kiln for most of last year, this project is back up and running and will be a fabulous welcoming feature for our campus. Well done to our Art Team captain Kahlan and her team of helpers for hanging the first instalment, we will keep producing more of these throughout the year and would love to host a parent/carer clay workshop later in the year so that families can create some legacy tiles too!

Thanks for all of your support during this great start to the year,

Liz and Rachel
