Interschool Sport

What a few weeks in sport!

Year 8 Footy Day

It had been a long time waiting for this day and the boys didn't let their college down! They came out swinging in the first game and all the stars were ready to shine. Captain Liam D. was marking everything and the forward line was working a treat with Thomas C. clunking everything in his direction. Marc A. was looking dangerous whenever the ball was on the ground in the forward 50 and the pair snagged 6 goals between them in the first half.

Daniel B. was Mr Reliable behind the ball and Lachie M. was providing some good run-off half-back and through the centre of the ground. Poor Elwood were outclassed and the boys were playing like a team that had been together for years.

The next game on the bigger oval created some challenges. We lost Sam H. early in a head clash and Glen Eira were putting up a good fight (as we gave them 3 of our players to make it 16 a side!). This meant we had to do a whole lot more running which wasn't ideal but it did give all our guys a chance to play in a range of positions. Jack C. was looking fantastic running out of the backline and it really hurt our chances to win the day once he hurt his elbow. Jack B. was everywhere and showed silky skills in the wet and Curtis M. was another player after a few years off from footy that started to find his feet and play some great tough football. We were much too strong and fast for them and were eventual winners in another convincing by 10+ goal victory.

Our biggest test was always going to be Albert Park who looked to have a few handy players in their Swannies jumpers. It was the grand final in round 4. The only problem was it was Chelt's third game straight after a first-round bye and 2 x 20 minute halves looked to have caught up with us! Although they jumped us and were 5 goals to 2 in the first half, we fought on gallantly and just fell short in the second half after threatening late to steal the game. They were worthy winners of the day but our boys were clearly the next best team and if not for a little luck and scheduling challenges, might have threatened on another day. Riley D. was best afield in this round and never gave up and almost created an unlikely comeback. If not for inaccurate kicking, we might be writing another story today. Harrison R. also played a great game in a team-oriented selfless position at centre half back on their star player and Daniel T. was one of many players that got better and better each quarter we played!

The last game was shortened in agreement with Prahran so they could get home at a reasonable time. However, this didn't stop it from raining goals! Seeing the camaraderie when the players got around Ramone H. when he kicked his first goal was fantastic! The boys didn't get hungry and look for individual goals but rather did the team thing, in particular Tyler B. who hadn't played much footy recently. Balin S. and Dean T. showed they could play at both ends of the ground and set up plenty of goals as Chelt enjoyed a very comfortable 3rd win for the day. Hayden P. was rewarded with a late goal too which he deserved after the courage he showed for the team all day and Phoenix V. did not stop running either and is going to have a very good footy career as he showed all the attributes of a champion. The boys tried really hard to get Jordan L.  a goal but it didn't matter because he showed himself to be a great player for us all day too! Last but not least was our brick wall Josh K. who played at full-back and provided stability down back and finally got rewarded with some forward time and a couple of goals also.

It was great fun coaching these boys with Mr Craig who I had the pleasure of coaching many years ago when he was in Year 7!

Congratulations to all the boys. You conducted yourselves perfectly. Our college values of personal best, respect, responsibility and sense of community were evident throughout the day and we were extremely proud of your effort and positive attitude!

Go Chelt!

Year 8 Girls Soccer

It was great to see the girls on the soccer pitch, considering they nearly didn't fill a team. Some committed students rallied their friends to pull on the boots for Chelt.

Congratulations to the girls who are now through to the Southern Metro Round on Wednesday 17 August.

Year 7 Girls Soccer

A great day was had by the Year 7 girls soccer team on Friday 17 June at Caulfield Park.

We drew our first game against Mentone as they were able to equalise with a few minutes remaining. We followed up with a convincing 3 - Nil win over Prahran College. Moving into our last game against Yavnah, we needed to win 4 - Nil to beat Mentone on a point differential and move into the next round as Bayside champions.

At half time, the scores were Nil all. The girls were playing safe and ultra-defensive despite needing a convincing win. However, it was a tale of two halves when the girls managed to come out after the break and kick five unanswered goals with another disallowed due to a late whistle. The girls were humble in victory and are ecstatic to be moving on to the next round on Wednesday 3 August.
