Campfire Conversation

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student voice was captured this week at a Young Peoples Campfire Conversation.  The Department of Education has been holding conversations across the state to inform the Self-Determination in Education Reforms. A Community session was held earlier this year and yesterday (Thursday 16th June) a group of students gathered to discuss what self determination in education looks like at GSSC.

Questions such as “If you were the Principal what would you change? and “How would you like to see your culture celebrated at school?” were posed and insights captured by graphic scribe, Debbie Wood.

It was great to hear positive comments from students about what they like/don’t like about school, suggestions about how to improve and openly share ideas for the future. A big thank you to Corey Walker for his Welcome to Country, guest speaker Wytasie Walker for sharing her recent experience through education and GSSC First Nations Student Leaders Bailey Armstrong and Frances Atkinson for their involvement.
