Reconciliation Cup

The Worawa Reconciliation Sport tournament is always a special event to be involved in and this year was no different. This event aims to build cultural awareness and to foster positive connections between the schools and girls competing.

This year we were one of 16 schools competing in the netball competition. Football, 3 on 3 basketball and volleyball were also features of the day, with approximately 250 girls involved in the event.

Worawa college is the perfect setting for a reconciliation tournament and they did a spectacular job showcasing their school and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The day started with a smoking ceremony and a Welcome to Country and following this, we were

straight into our games.

After some consistent and smart netball, we finished the first stage of the round robin tournament in second place and this gave us the opportunity to play in the semi-final. Unfortunately, we lost our semi-final by two goals.

Our team, comprised of Year 11 and Year 10 students, were  good sports and a pleasure to spend time with.

At the conclusion of the day the most valuable player in each sport was announced, and Lara Warner was awarded the trophy for netball. What a wonderful achievement, especially considering there were 150 girls playing netball!

Ultimately though, although winning and individual achievements are nice, this day is more about supporting one of our neighboring schools and playing in the spirit of reconciliation.

Congratulations to all involved and a big thank you to Kerry Davies and Jaimee Petersen for their support on the day.
