Sport

Wow, what a big couple of weeks we've had in sport, with inter-school netball teams going out regularly, as well as badminton and girls AFL.

Each time the teams went out, the feedback received was the students were well behaved and really enjoyed the day.

Our HHS Athletics Carnival went ahead, despite the threatening weather forecast, and it was a great success.

Not only did we have a great number of students compete in all of the events offered, we had two records broken on the day.

Paisley Stock won the 14Yr Female 1500m in 6:27.80 which was 1.78 seconds faster than

Jemma Iacono in 2006.

Denzel Parsons won the 14 Yr male 100m sprint in 13.22, beating the record by 2 seconds, held by Jason Brooks-Moate from 2012.

Congratulations to the following students who are our Age Group Champions:

13 Yr Female:  Tia Montgomery

13 Yr Male:       Zaine Dyer

Girls Football

I could easily go as far as saying this is one of my most favourite days on the school calendar, some will think that’s absurd, but for me ‘Girls

Footy’ takes the cake.

Dating way back to the early 2000s Healesville High School have always been a force to be reckoned with when it came to our female football team. Rob Duke coached with passion like the girls were his ‘mighty tiges’ and it was the one day of the year the girls were actually allowed to play.

Times have certainly changed in the female football space but one thing has not, our girls still know how to play footy!

The weather gods were kind to us again this year but the fixture not quite as much. Our team was made up students across Years 8, 9 and 10 of mixed experience and ability and the girls had only minutes to warm up and prepare for their first match up.

We took on a top age Lilydale High, played defensively, but unfortunately couldn’t come away with the win. The teamwork and encouragement were certainly present we just didn’t hit the scoreboard as much as we needed to.

Game two we took on Upper Yarra Secondary College and the girls put on an absolute clinic. Ishi Stock, Mia Erickson, Shanice Banks and Paisley Stock made up the ‘engine room’ in the mid field, while the likes of Mia Kershaw and Belle Watson did some damage on the scoreboard. It was a comfortable victory for the girls and they were well and truly fired up for their next game.

Lilydale Heights brought a big team into game three, but our girls were not rattled at all. Libi Wal won the toss for us and we kicked with the wind to get on the board early in the first half. With play more evenly spread across the entire field Charlotte McMurray, Mia Oliver, Lyndsay Mackenzie and Emily Anderson Hunter all played brilliant roles around the ground and kept the ball in the hands of their teammates.

The game was fierce right through to the dying seconds where Lilydale scored a last minute goal and took the game from us by two points. We finished in the bronze medal position overall on the day and made it back onto the bus before it bucketed down with rain.

I’m super proud of the leadership and mentoring displayed from some of our senior girls, they were supportive and patient with those less experienced and happy to celebrate the small successes of everyone on the team.

I would like to thank the girls for their behaviour, positivity and for keeping the girls footy tradition alive at HHS. We have some unbelievable female talent in our school community, I would encourage more staff to get involved with our girls footy team, but I love coaching and watching them play so much, I

might keep it a secret a little longer.
