Australian Maths Competition

On the 3rd August, a group of selected students decided to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition. The Australian Mathematics Competition is an annual contest where advanced mathematics students complete a 30-question test in 75 minutes and get their scores compared across the country and get sorted into high distinction, distinction, credit, and participation categories. Throughout Term 3, in preparation for the competition, students of different year levels worked both autonomously and collaboratively on math problems. Each session motivated cognitive thinking and involved the trial of different solutions.

Here are what some of the participants had to say:

“The Australian Maths Competition is an amazing opportunity to collaborate with other bright minds. It was really helpful seeing other people’s point of view on different questions and it really helped my understanding of maths”.

“I had a lot of fun in this year’s Australian Maths Competition, collaborating with others and generally having fun preparing for it…I loved it an would definitely love to do it in the future”

Year 8 student

“If you enjoy challenging yourself in math and enjoy thinking outside the box, I think the competition would be good for you. You get to collaborate with people and problem solve. I personally found the experience useful because you get to see how other people solve the same problem and collaborate to find the most efficient way”.

“It was a nice experience, a relaxed environment. It helped me to become more collaborative amongst my peers and being surrounded by people more knowledgeable than me forced me to challenge myself”.
