Professional Learning Community Foundation  (Preps)

We're coming up close to the end of Term 3! Time really does fly when you're having fun.

What a wonderful couple of fun filled weeks we have had in Prep. In Week 7 we celebrated book week. Our students created some book character themed masks, we read lots of our favourite books and we even had the opportunity to dress up.

For Writing in Week 7, our tables QUIT! Just like the crayons (a reference to the book The Day the Crayons Quit). Our Preps did a wonderful job at writing letters back to our tables to convince them to return.

We were also gifted a school pet! Lizzie the lizard, this was the result of our students writing portfolio task. This piece is a letter addressed to Mr Young requesting a dinosaur as a school pet (bearded dragon… dinosaur… close enough right)! Keep an eye out for your child's portfolio towards the end of week 10 to read this fantastic piece.

Week 8… What an incredible week we had, filled with a dress rehearsal, tech rehearsal and 3 wonderful performances.

I know I speak for all of teachers when I say, we couldn’t have done it without all of the hard work from everyone involved throughout the term. But a special mention to our remarkable Prep students, who really were ABSOLUTE LEGENDS for all 3 shows (I may have even whitenessed a couple of proud teacher tears on the side of the stage).

Week 9, this week it has been great to see everyone back and refreshed, ready to finish off the term and consolidate all of our learning. Some of our students may have noticed, that there have been some kindergarten students touring our school this week! Miss Turnbull and Miss Sampson have been working hard to introduce our 2023 Preps to Delacombe Primary, easing their transition, ready for some fun filled orientation days next term. If you know any Preps enrolling at Delacombe Primary in 2023 please get them to give our friendly office staff a call to organise a school tour and to book in their transition sessions!

Just over 1 week to go! Keep up the great work.

Lastly, a friendly reminder to please make sure your child is at school by 8.50am each morning.

Thanks and enjoy your week,

The Prep Team!

Professional Learning Community 1  (Grade 1 )

Yo, yo, yo! Grade 1s in the house! We hipped and hopped all the way to rapper town.

For our concert performance, Grade 1 students performed a number of rap legends from way back to modern day. We had such a blast practising and performing for all of you. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.

We are now back in the swing of learning. In Literacy, we have been writing a recount of our concert experience using powerful writing strategies like hyperbole and similes. Here are some great sentences that some Grade 1 students created:

  • The bus to concert was as loud as a storm.
  • I was so nervous, I could have died!
  • The lights were as bright as the sun.

In Numeracy, students have continued their learning on sharing equally - the stepping stone to division. They have been cutting objects into halves, splitting items into halves, and now even sharing large numbers of items equally between groups. You can support their learning at home by considering how you share food or items at home - “hmmm… is this fair? How many should we have each?”

Professional Learning Community 2 (Grade 2 )

Hello PLC2 Parents, Guardians and Carers,

What a couple of weeks it has been! A huge congratulations to you all and the students on getting through concert week. A massive effort! We know the students had an absolute ball in completing their performances on both Wednesday and Thursday. There were most definitely a few nervous and anxious students, and it was fantastic to see these students resilience and determination come to the forefront. Again, an amazing effort on rocking out to Queen so brilliantly!

We now take our focus to the last couple of weeks before the Term 3 school holidays. We would like to remind the students about the learning and behaviour expectations both in the classroom and in the yard. In the last 2 weeks we will be focusing on making connections and inferring in reading, writing an exposition on why all schools should have a concert, and finally in maths, students will be learning about fractions.

Have a great week!

PLC2 Team

Professional Learning Community 3 (Grade 3)

My, my, what an unforgettable 3 weeks we have experienced here in PLC 3. As I am sure you all are, we are TREMENDOUSLY proud of our students for embracing a growth mindset and giving the Delacombe Primary School Concert a RED-HOT GO! The students' smiles were like a sudden beam of sunlight illuminating the darkest corners of the auditorium – a truly spectacular experience to be cherished by all! We would like to extend our thanks to our students for practising, perfecting and performing, our families for supporting, cheering and celebrating their child’s success, and the DPS staff for choreographing, organising, and giving time to make this possible. We had the time of our lives – bring on 2024!

In Reading, our students have been transformed into Book Detectives by exploring and identifying the various genres of texts. Book Week is all about celebrating our love of books, and it was fantastic to see so many students bring in their favourite texts. Students justified their selection and seeing them use their knowledge of genres in answering was superb. In Writing, our persuasive text requesting Mr Young to extend the number of performances, or to lessen, depending on our point of view, concluded… we are yet to see whether he will come round to the proposal! Still connecting with our concert theme, we learned how to write a description centred on The Greatest Show… The DPS Concert! In Numeracy, we have continued consolidating our knowledge of fractions and extending this understanding to create connections to decimal notation. Check out your child’s portfolio, you might just find the world’s greatest party!

We love reading here at DPS and, in the spirit of Book Week, we leave you with the poem I Opened a Book by Julia Donaldson to encourage the reader that’s inside us all.

I opened a book and in I strode.

Now nobody can find me.

I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,

My town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,

I’ve swallowed the magic potion.

I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king

And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.

I shared their tears and laughter

And followed their road with its bumps and bends

To happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came.

The cloak can no longer hide me.

My chair and my house are just the same,

But I have a book inside me.

Have a FANTASMAGORICAL week,

The PLC 3 Team

Professional Learning Community 4 (Grade 4)

Well, what a fantastic concert!!! All students did such a great job on stage and tried their absolute best. I hope you all liked it as much as we did practising and performing it.

Just a reminder that swimming will be Week 1 of next term (yes, straight after the holidays). Students will need to wear their bathers under their school uniform. They will need to bring a separate bag containing their towel, goggles (if they have a pair) and their underwear. It will start on Monday the 3rd of October until Friday the 7th of October, the students will be attending a swimming lesson each day. Three lessons will occur between 1:00 pm and 2.30 pm.

4C will swim from 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

4B will swim from 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm

4A will swim from 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm.

All classes leave 30 minutes before their lesson starts and return 30 minutes after their lesson finishes. All permission notes are now done through Compass, if you are having trouble with accepting/returning the permission note please come and ask you teacher or see the office for help.

Enjoy the rest of the week.

Regards,

PLC 4 Teachers

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

Well done to all our fabulous students for the effort they put into our concert pieces. It has been weeks and weeks of hard work and rehearsal. Thanks to parents and families for your support during what was a busy week.

This week we have attended the Halls Gap camp- students enjoyed their trip up with a brief stop at Great Western. The first day was the usual excitement of discovering the surroundings and organising cabins. Students participated in their first activity and had a delicious chicken parma. Later on the first night we spent some time around the campfire and went for a night walk.

Tuesday saw an action packed day of activities for each group. There was archery, hut building, high-ropes course and team initiatives. Students participated in a trivia/games night where we got to see some interesting talents on display including some amazing dance moves.

The big hike on Wednesday morning took us to Chatauqua Peak. It was an arduous trek that took in some scenic views and really showed us the meaning of the word persistence.

What an amazing group of students we have in PLC 5 and we are so lucky to work with them everyday.

A big thanks to all the ES staff, teachers and Mr Young for their help and support with making the camp run as smooth as possible.

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

What a wild week we all had last week!

It is so lovely to have the pressure of concert taken off, but we know that some students are already missing the singing and dancing practises during the week!

In Reading this week students are making connections to different emotions, life experiences and situations that are identified within the class text ‘The Hunger Games’. It has been nice to have students make many personal text to self connections and share them openly with the class.

In Writing, students are using their fresh knowledge and understanding of music and persuading an audience of what ‘the best song’ is. So far we are hearing of arguments supporting artists like Michael Jackson, Billie Eilish and even Elvis Presley! We have encouraged students to try and link three arguments to the ideas of happy, healthy and wise and use a structure of IBET within their paragraphs.

During Numeracy this week students have been learning about translating, rotating and reflecting shapes. These lessons have been excellent to re visit the properties of shapes, and introduce new skills to students such as positive and negative integers on an axis.

Just a few reminders that students attending Phoenix P-12 Community College in 2023 are attending a transition session from 11:10-1:40pm on Thursday. Students that are going to other high schools in the area will stay at school with a classroom teacher.

Don’t forget to return your child’s Passport to Success consent form ASAP as this program begins in Week 1 of Term 4. A facilitator from The Smith Family is running this transition program for 6 weeks for all students in Grade 6.
