Junior School Highlights

We have almost made it to the end of 2022. And what a year it has been.

Being the first full year back in the classrooms for students has had its highs and of course lows. The Junior School team has focused on the many positives that we have encountered and have celebrated these in many ways, mainly within our year level assemblies. Our year level assemblies have been a place of achievement and reflection where we have  supported Years 7-9 in gaining an understanding about the college’s high expectations of their presence within the school.

Years 7 and 8 have had the amazing opportunities to go on camps this year and experience making new friends, going outside their comfort zone, and also creating memories for years to come, I know I definitely remember my school camps at that age as well.

Year 9 students also went camp last week, with a small group attending and participating in bike riding and also rafting.

Students have really enjoyed the start to their transition classes for 2023 and are settling in well. They are confident and eager to learn and to meet their new teachers for new subjects. It is vital that students complete any homework they have acquired during this time so that they stay up to date. But it is also important that they enjoy their well-deserved break.

The college is offering 2 days of activities on Thursday 15th December and Friday 16th December, which includes a trip to Funfields and in house activities, sport and a film. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask.

I would like to thank the Junior School team for what has been a very successful year. It is with great sadness that I step down from the role of Junior School Leader in 2023 and also take on a new pathway at a new school. After being at the college for six years it is time to be a bit closer to home. It will be hard to move on from the Glen Eira community, but I know you will all be successful in your future endeavours.

Year 7  Primary School Visits

In recent weeks, a number of Year 7 students have visited their former primary schools to speak to grade 6 students about making the important transition to secondary school.

Monako Bernabe, Tanay Aydin and Ameerah Dela Cruz travelled to Murrumbeena Primary School where they spent an entire day providing grade 6 students with information about daily life at Glen Eira College.

Jasmin Stewart-Luu and Audrey McNeill visited Carnegie Primary School where they addressed a large cohort of grade 6 students, who had many questions to ask about secondary school life.

All five students broached upon several aspects of secondary school and most importantly, they made the grade 6 students feel at ease about the important transition that they would soon be making.

A big thank you to Monako, Tanay, Ameerah, Jasmin and Audrey for representing Glen Eira College and doing such an excellent job.

Year 8 News

With Year 8 now officially done and dusted we would like to pass on our gratitude to the Year 9s of 2023 and wish them all the best for the year to come. As leaders of the Junior School, they now have the additional responsibility of being positive role models for their younger peers. As coordinators, we are confident they will rise to the occasion and look forward to continuing to support them within the classroom.

Year 9 will also bring with it further opportunities to excel academically, socially, and emotionally. Electives represent the steppingstone towards an increasing amount of student voice with regards to subject selection, while the updated class groups provide a chance to develop new relationships with peers.

Nevertheless, change can sometimes also be daunting. We would like to reassure our young people that our doors are always open, and we are always happy to listen to any concerns they might have.

From both of us, congratulations to the GEC Year 8 cohort of 2022!

Year 9 News

Year 9 students have transitioned into Year 10  with enthusiasm and joy.  It is now time to reflect on term goals and ensure a good study routine is in place for the following year.

The school provides a range of extracurricular activities outside the school including sports, chess club, robotics club, art club, enterprising & sewing club etc. Please encourage your child to take full advantage of these opportunities that might seem interesting. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any competition or lunch time clubs, please feel free to contact relevant teachers or year level coordinators.

Mental health sessions form part of the school’s well-being policy. Any concerns in this regard should be directed to the well-being team.

Thank you again for your continued support.

Year 9 Coordinators

Senior School News

I would like to congratulate the Senior School students on completing another year.

To the Class of 2022 we congratulate you all on a fantastic year and sincerely hope that your results allow you to move into your intended pathway next year. Please remember that if you need any career advice Ms Palm and the Senior School team are available. If you need advice or have any questions when results are released, please come in or contact us.

Our preparations for 2023 have been in full swing. Our VCE transition week has been completed with all classes beginning the content required for the subject. All students need to make sure that they have registered for the google classroom groups for each of their 2023 classes. It is important students complete the required holiday homework by the beginning of the school year. If students were absent and did not get the codes for google classroom, they should contact their teacher and request the code. All VCE students will have verification tasks in February and early March to confirm that students have chosen appropriate courses and have understood the early parts of the course.

To all 2023 Year 10 students, welcome to Senior School and we hope the start of transition has gone well.

We hope you all have an enjoyable break and look forward to seeing you in 2023.
