Wellbeing Wonderings

Simple Wellbeing Strategies for a successful return to school
Holidays have been and gone and they were a wonderful time to slow down, have pyjama days and be relaxed. Now that we are back at school there are a number of simple things that you can do to make sure you are successful in getting up, refreshed and ready for a day of learning. Be gentle and kind to each other and remember that you will feel all kinds of emotions. This is normal. Be patient, give hugs and be clear with your communication. A consistent, calm positive message is the key.
1. Prioritise Sleep
A good night’s sleep is vital. Most primary school aged children require 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Sleep is when our bodies regenerate and rest and this sets us up for a wonderful day at school where we can have fun with our friends, tackle challenges and create new learning opportunities. Healthy sleep habits mean earlier bed times for earlier wake up times in the morning. Turn off devices as hour before bed and encourage reading before lights are turned out. A quiet, darkened room helps to set our body clocks for sleep. Sometimes having a warm bath or shower helps to relax and allow our bodies to unwind.
2. Re-establish a regular routine
Often on school holidays we eat when we want, go to bed when we want and wake up when we want. It is important to prepare our bodies for school by creating routines that help us to regulate. Eating at regular intervals (sometimes similar to your school day helps), going to bed at the same time and waking at the same time create less stress and apprehension before school.
3. Planning and Preparation
You can help out at home by getting your school bag, lunch and uniform ready the night before. Parents and caregivers, you can create an age appropriate list for your children to follow that helps cut down the last minute rushing in the morning. This list can be near the door so that we are encouraging independence with the morning routine.
4. Set Intentions the night before
Take the time as a family to connect and celebrate the successes of the day. Remind each other of the love and connection that sustains you and go to bed feeling happy, energised and excited for what tomorrow may bring.
