School of Entrepreneurs

News from the School of Entrepreneurs

Suddenly it is over!

The end of the school year is a paradox. It comes around so quickly, yet sometimes it can’t come soon enough. I would like to acknowledge the teaching staff who taught across Years 7 - 12. While there haven’t been any shutdowns this year, it has been one that has again tested the resilience, patience and capabilities of all teachers. COVID’s long tail has continued to play havoc with staffing levels, and most staff have covered classes to the very limits of our enterprise agreement. Simultaneously, creativity and quality have been maintained, students provided with rich opportunities and with constructive and plentiful feedback to assist learning growth. In particular, I wish those staff members who are completing their time at St Luke’s every success and happiness for the future.

Similarly, we say farewell and thank you to those students (and their families) who are leaving St Luke’s. We have approximately 10 Year 10 students who are moving house or school, or taking up tertiary education opportunities. We trust they will take with them great and lasting memories of their time with their teachers and peers.

Congratulations to Year 10 students who are wrapping up their Legacy Projects. I shared the “St Luke’s Cookbook” with you last week - and thanks to those of you how sent in recipes. Following is a short wrap up of this work from Mrs Chloe Viney.

To Year 8 parents and students, we look forward to welcoming you to the School of Entrepreneurs. There won’t be major changes to your schooling experience, but each year you progress so too does the expectation of engagement, effort and cooperation.

Year 9 students moving into Year 10 next year will begin their HSC journey in the subjects of Design & Technology and Work Studies. Indeed, students in Creative Technologies and Hospitality classes have commenced their Preliminary course work this year already. It might take some time to make this adjustment, but adjust we must.

Year 10 students face the biggest of changes as they step up for the ‘main game’ in Year 11 (but note, not the only game). Class sizes will be smaller, expectations higher, assessment tasks more complex, and responsibility and accountability greater. With this, however, students begin to understand the relationship between themselves and their teachers more clearly and productively. Our job is to squeeze the potential out of every student and prepare them for a changing world beyond the school gates. A combination of tough love and compassion are some of our most important and powerful teaching tools. With the student supported in the same way from home we will watch the emergence of young women and men who will soon step into part-time jobs, further studies and, dare I say it, behind the wheel of your car!

Congratulations to our Year 12 students who have faced their first round of HSC assessment tasks. It has been a busy and at times stressful few weeks, which will continue right into the final week of the year. Students, you will be rewarded with a break but not a holiday! Keep your head in the game for the next 6 weeks and be prepared to continue your work from day 1 (yes, even though those first four days will be our retreat days). I hope you return rested, refreshed and ready for the exciting year ahead.

It has been a pleasure working with so many parents throughout the year, and I look forward to our continued work together in 2023.

I wish your families a safe and blessed Christmas.

St Luke, pray for us.

Mr Anthony Blomfield - Acting Head of School of Entrepreneurs

From Year 12…

Study opportunities

Sydney University is offering a range of revision and study courses during January. Here is the link for you to review the options.

From Year 10…

Legacy projects

“Legacy projects” are the culmination of the Life Design course in years 7 to 10. Here is a term 4 wrap up:

Term 4 has seen Year 10 students complete a Legacy Project in Life Design. The 3:3 basketball competition came to an epic finish with a draw at full time! As extra time started, both teams were competitive and keen to score. Some well executed moves and accurate shooting saw team 7 come away victorious by 2 points!

A huge congratulations to the winning team, and thank you to all the students who participated with such energy, good sportsmanship and community spirit. The students who organised the tournament are to be congratulated for their organisation of teams, referees, draw, scoring, teacher supervision and to finish with an awards ceremony that really showcased their talents. The initiative and enthusiasm shown by Christoffe, Hayden, Lincoln and Ethan was evident in the success of this tournament and how smoothly each session was run.

When students take ownership of their learning in an area they are passionate about, wonderful growth can be seen. The connections each student made with others, the benefits of some physical activity and healthy competition are just some of the advantages of projects like this.

From Year 9…

YEAR 9 DUKE OF ED

The following students are to be congratulated on achieving their Bronze Level Award in 2022:

  • Weston Malicdem
  • Lara Derjani
  • Alexander Chesnakov
  • Caleb Quintos
  • Ariel Delos Santos

The remaining students are either waiting to hear from the Office of Sport regarding the acceptance of their activities or only have a few hours of logging remaining. We will recognise these students at an official ceremony in the new school year.

The cohort are to be commended on their commitment to the Duke of Ed Award. They have shown enthusiasm, creativity and collaboration each and every week and have set the standard for the Duke of Ed program here at St Luke's. I am exceptionally proud of them. I would like to thank the following teachers who were camp chaperones or activity assessors throughout the year: Mr Hegarty, Ms Nash, Mrs Burns, Mrs Paz, Mrs Camilleri, Ms Chand, Mrs Mayer, Mrs Barnier, Mrs Sluiter, Mr Komorowski, Ms Cascarino, Mr Magsino and Ms Gallo. I would also like to thank Mrs Bauer for her continued support.

Next year, we will have a new group of Year 9's taking on the elective to obtain their Bronze as well as a mix of Years 9-12 students undertaking the Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold Level as an extracurricular activity. I look forward to keeping you posted on our adventures as we expand this prestigious program and make it bigger and better!

If you have the chance in the holidays, I encourage you to enjoy a bush walk with your families to enjoy the great outdoors and challenge yourselves to achieve more than you could ever imagine.
