Grade 2-3

Mathematics/Matemáticas

Maths Builders has been all about statistics and probability, 3D shape and symmetry over the past few weeks. In Spanish, students created 3D nets with paper and used playdough and toothpicks to create and describe their 3D objects. In English, students have been playing Dice Footy, King's Tax and conducting various surveys with one another to represent data on different types of graphs. Dice Footy has been a crowd favourite- have a go playing at home!  All you need is 2 dice and paper.

Inquiry

"Reuse it or Lose it!" was our Inquiry topic this term. Students explored the 'war on waste' and learned all about food wastage in Australia and across the world along with some incredible ways to reduce our wastage in everyday life. We tallied the different sources of energy that are used in our class at school and home and created graphs to represent the data. Students designed an object using recyclable material and we had a gallery walk to present our learning.

Literacy

Students were very excited to publish their persuasive and narratives texts this week. We have been exploring different books with: bold beginnings, mighty middles and excellent endings. Students have been applying the authors' strategies in these books to their own writing.  Students have been crafting these writing pieces for a number of weeks now, so it was a great sense of achievement to finally publish and celebrate our writing with an author's chair session! We are so proud of their final products. In Reading, we have been learning to look beyond the text to make inferences. Students read classic fables such as The Hare and the Tortoise, The Ugly Duckling, The 3 Little Pigs and The Boy Who Cried Wolf to infer the messages, based on text clues and prior knowledge.

Literatura

In Spanish this term, students have stretched their writing abilities by working on los cuentos narrativos (narrative stories). Students worked on learning vocabulary to describe characters, writing a problem and a solution. At the end of the term, students have been publishing their stories using the website My Storybook where they were able to illustrate and write their stories. The students are very proud of their writing. Take a look at our narratives below. ¡Felicidades!

To end the year, students are working on performing a role play of their narrative stories in small groups. Keep an eye out for their published videos in SeeSaw! In Week 11, students will continue their learning about Mexico during Semana Cultural.
