House Debating 2018
House Debating 2018 was an incredible experience of House spirit and competition between the Houses. Each team showcased their problem-solving skills with their speeches over the three days of competition.
House Debating began with the first topic “We should make Years 11 and 12 mandatory”. Providing a polarising grey area in the ethics of education, each team had to find ways to effectively argue their own contention even while recognising the faults in their own stances. Meticulously planning their arguments in the space of a few days, the teams faced head to head on Monday and Tuesday. Hard-fought and well spoken, the atmosphere of the room was surreal as each speaker gave their full effort in the debates. After careful consideration by the judges, Griffin and Phoenix came out on top with better constructed arguments and structures.
With the first round finished, the two remaining houses prepared for the challenge presented in the final debate; “We should remove all examinations from secondary education.” Once again, an ethical grey area was presented that created conflicting arguments between the two teams. After merely two days to prepare, the two houses were pitted against each other to decide the victor of the competition. Armed with experience, strong arguments and outstanding public speaking, it was a fascinating spectacle that displayed the brightest debaters of Nossal. All speakers went above and beyond to put their house in front before the judges made their final decision. When the dust settled, Phoenix’s fiery and brilliant model took the victory and bragging rights along with it.
An outstanding event where House spirit truly shone, House Debating was an amazing experience. Many people’s views were challenged and changed along with the debaters themselves. While the topics split the teams apart, the event brought all of us together.

2018 SEN Year 10 Cup
On Friday 18 May, the Year 10’s participated in the inaugural SEN Cup, a friendly competition organised by the Year 10 SRC representatives of the four select entry schools, MacRobertson Girls' High School, Melbourne High School, Suzanne Cory High School and Nossal. The aim of the day was to establish a stronger relationship within the selective entry network through the participation in a range of friendly sporting activities. Our students competed in a range of both active and passive sports, including badminton, table tennis, netball, volleyball, theatre sports, chess, debating and OzCLO.
Nossal had the honour of hosting OzCLO in the JRC and badminton in the gym. The day began at 10:00am, a late start to allow time for teams from other schools to arrive. After a brief welcome, we officially began the competition. Our badminton and OzCLO teams showed determination and skill, encouraging and supporting each other whilst also showing great sportsmanship to the other schools’ teams. We concluded the day with a sausage sizzle, allowing students to socialise, creating new connections and bonds between the four schools.
Overall, the day was a resounding success and all Year 10 students that participated showed great enthusiasm and enjoyment. Nossal students across all sports displayed amazing teamwork, we couldn’t be prouder of the way that they represented our school. A massive thank you to everyone who helped organise the day, especially Mr Butler, the PE staff, Ms Vanstan, Jason and all volunteers. We couldn’t possibly have done it without you!

Nossal Students Among a Special Few at Monash University
On Wednesday 9 May, Monash Engineering welcomed 90 first year students, their families and representatives from their high schools to the annual Engineering Scholarship Celebration.
Nithiya Pathmasiri, Daniel Khoo and Kevin Luong were among the select group of recipients celebrated on the evening. The Dean of Engineering, Professor Elizabeth Croft presented a gift to each scholarship recipient in recognition of their achievements.
Guest-speaker, Mechanical Engineering student Monique Lautee presented an inspiring insight into her life at Monash University.
“Engineering is about turning the theory into something useful. It’s going to challenge the way you think, the way you problem solve, the way you work with other people and it will also impact the way you see the world and your place in it,” she emphasised.
Monique’s advice to first year students is to make the most of every opportunity and don’t be afraid to try something new. “Monash has offered me countless opportunities to not only advance my technical skills, but also develop myself as a person – both professionally and personally.”
