Year 7 Medieval Day

Medieval Day!

Year 7 students experienced our annual Cecil Hills High School ‘Medieval Day’ on Thursday 7, September.  The team from Living History Australia visited our school armed with a vast array of medieval weaponry, armour and clothing. They also brought with them some Japanese swords including a Katana.

The day began with a display of medieval weapons and armour.  Students learned how knights used to fight and train. They also learnt how they got dressed into their armour.  Our students even had the opportunity to dress up as medieval knights themselves.

The following session was all about Medieval Japan. Students learned about the Samurai and their Bushido code of honour.  Students were also given the opportunity to dress up as a Samurai whilst also learning about how they fought and never surrendered!

The rest of the day was dedicated to some fun outdoor medieval activities. Archery was an important skill in Medieval Europe. Our year 7 students were given the chance to test their skills with a bow and arrow.  A few Robin Hoods were discovered on the day with quite a few hitting the ‘bull’s eye.’

Students were also taught how to play the popular Viking game of ‘Knattleikr’.  This sport was popular in Iceland and involves a ball, wooden paddles and two sets of goals.

Two teams battled it out for the most goals. Many of our students displayed great skill and sportsmanship (and were far less violent than the Vikings!)

Just like Medieval Knights, our students were also taught how to battle each other using swords, shields and helmets.  Teams of four got to ‘fight to the death’. A few teachers may also have joined the battle as well!

An enjoyable day was had by all.  The King was pleased and all Lords, Knights and peasants were treated to a royal day of medieval fun!

By order of the King!
