Deputy Principal's Report

Twilight Open Evening and Careers Expo
We would like to thank all of our families for their attendance at out Twilight Open Evening and Careers Expo. There were close to 500 families in attendance at this evening which we believe provides current and future students of CRC Sydenham with a great deal of information which they can use to assist them in making the decision about planning their 2017 VCE or VCAL Program. We believe very strongly in the mantra “Every Student, Every Pathway” and so we aim to ensure that all of our students have made the right choices in constructing their future learning program. As a specialist senior secondary college we offer more subject choices than any other school in this region and we hope that this helps our students to remain engaged in their selected learning pathway.
Reports and Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews – Thursday September 7
Parent-Teacher-Student interviews will be conducted from 4.00pm to 8.30pm on Thursday September 7. Parents can view semester 2 interim reports and book interviews using the Parent Access Module which can be accessed via a link on the College website. A letter will be sent to all parent/guardians on Friday August 18 which will outline all of the necessary information for you to access this system. Electronic versions of student reports will be available online from Friday September 1. Reports will not be posted to parents and a hard copy of this report will not be issued.
Students should also attend these interviews with parents as the interviews will focus on the study habits and future learning goals of the students and, as such, they must contribute to discussions for them to be effective.
It is recommended that students whose parents require an interpreter for these interviews contact Naomi Bartley in Student Services and express their needs.
Pathway Planning
In addition to the current academic demands of each student’s program we are currently asking them to give strong consideration to their intended program in 2018. Year 11 students are required to submit 2018 courses online via the Web Preferences system by Friday August 25.
Year 12 students are currently working through a process of pathway planning during their pastoral periods. This process involves investigation of tertiary programs and the whole range of pathway options available. Students are being guided through the VTAC application process which opened on August 7 and closes on Thursday September 28.
We encourage parents to discuss this topic with their sons/daughters and to assist them in embracing a wide network of support in this very important process.
For the week commencing the 21st August, the College will continue to develop their understanding and skills in building resilience. Earlier in the year, staff were developed in the area of resilience by guest presenter Andrew Fuller. Staff continue their journey during this week by reviewing the understanding of resilience, assessing behaviours associated with low resilience and strategies for developing resilience. Students will be engaged in the Andrew Fuller “Resilient Youth” Survey. Through this survey, the College will be able to obtain quantitative data relating to a resilience based on a series of questions. Through this information, staff aim to develop and enhance programs in order to ensure that resilience can be built and that students are able to draw upon strengths to flexibly respond to the challenges of life.
