YEAR 12 TILES

Year 12 Mosaic Tile project 2016

Each year every year 12 student is asked to decorate a hand-made ceramic tile that becomes part of an artwork permanently exhibited outdoors near the Senior Learning Centre.

The Class of 2016 did an exceptional job, demonstrating humour, creativity and a unique flair for art. This year’s mosaic is a testimony to their planning, dedication and ability to strive for excellence.

ASEAN YOUTH CONFERENCE

On Friday September 2nd, I was lucky enough to accompany 6 fantastic young ladies, Jessica Adams, Lucaya Rich, Eliza Kidder, Ella Whistlecroft, Violetta Minzenmay and Holly Finlay, to the ASEAN Youth Conference at Melbourne University’s Sidney Myer Asia Centre. ASEAN is the Association of South-East Asian Nations and was formed in 1968 by Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. ASEAN has grown to include Myanmar, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Before the conference, we had a couple of weeks of preparation for the country we were assigned, Singapore. Students were required to create a position summary for their country, outlining generic information related to them and their country’s stance on the three issues of refugees, trade and climate change. Students paired off into those three groups and researched further. The students worked extremely hard at our few after school meetings, creating a fantastic position summary and assembling a catalogue of information about the other countries represented at the conference and their stance on each of the issues we were to discuss.

The students represented Mount Eliza Secondary College excellently. They were clearly one of the most prepared teams and together with the teams from Cambodia and Laos, they posed plenty of hard-hitting questions after position summaries and created agreements for trade during lunchtime. Our speakers for our position summary were Jessica Adams and Lucaya Rich. They spoke clearly and loudly and Jess spoke well in her Malay introduction. Schools were encouraged to introduce themselves in the language of their country, however we were one of only two that chose to do so!

The students should be incredibly proud of themselves. Not only did they represent the college proudly, but they have given themselves a fantastic opportunity to use debating skills, and they’ve improved their abilities to work collaboratively with students from other schools.

Several people commented positively on our position summary introduction in Malay, including a Singapore native and some Indonesian natives. A lot of the other teachers commented on how well our students had researched and how thoroughly they had prepared their information. They were impressed with our public speaking skills and expressed how bright the futures of these students are. They were exemplary!

A wonderful experience, and a fantastic day with fantastic students!

SCIENCE NEWS

It has been a busy start to the term. Our senior students are now either in the final stages of completing Unit 2 subjects or preparing for their final exams. We wish all our senior students the best for their upcoming exams.

Forensic Science

Students have just completed the physics component of the course. They investigated velocity, acceleration, Newton’s three laws of motion, collisions and energy. We have just started our final unit of work on chemistry where we will cover acids and bases and some analytical  chemistry.

11 Chemistry

Students are currently completing the end of Unit 2- How substances in water are measured and analysed. As part of this unit we

investigated the content of fertiliser by two methods- gravimetric analysis (amount of sulphur) and colorimetric analysis (amount of phosphorus).

7 Science

In year 7 Science we have started the Forces unit of work. In this unit we investigate magnets, static electricity, gravity and other forces. Pictured:

Year 8 Science

The Year 8 Science classes are currently investigating Chemical Reactions. In the photographs students are completing practical work where they perform a series of experiments and then determine if a chemical reaction has taken place. They look for things such as colour change, a new substance forming, heat released or absorbed and bubbles forming.
