Product Design

Technology students from the year 11 Product Design class have been constructing re-designed timber chairs. The chairs are made using traditional timber joints and are completely made from timber without the use of nails or screws. The chars are based on the Windsor High Back Chair, which is a traditional timber chair. The students have completed their planning and are currently preparing the materials. This includes shaping and forming the woodwork joints and shaping the leg and seat timbers. As can be seen in the photo,  Alain is using the wood lathe to shape the tapered joints to attach the legs to the seat. The chairs are made from Tasmanian Oak with either a solid timber or upholstered seat. This project forms part of the course in unit one, where students re-design an existing furniture item.

The  bespokechairs are very popular with students and they are being designed to suit the individual for size and comfort.

Permaculture and Environment Classes

Permaculture and Environment classes have been developing the new horticulture site. The gardens are developing along permaculture lines, working with nature rather than against it. This means that the gardening practices used by the Permaculture class are about reducing water use and relying more on developing gardens which will thrive in the natural climate.  The gardens which the class is developing has been prepared to make use of natural rain runoff to provide water for the plants. The soil is prepared and shaped to allow water from the rain to penetrate the soil and water the gardens through pathways and gentle slopes.  This garden has been planted with food plants so that it will function well as a food site, with vegetables, flowers and fruits.

VCAL Food Studies

VCAL Food Studies students were given the task of creating a two course meal for four people, using classic, simple ingredients such as eggs, flour, milk, meat and cook these using recipes that our grandparents would make: trifle, lasagne, shepherd’s pie, sticky date pudding, lamingtons, etc. The students then set the table with tablecloths, plates, drink-ware and cutlery and sat down to enjoy their two course meal in their group of four.  Food was well-presented, tables were nicely set and the students enjoyed sitting together for a proper meal.

Year 8 Food Technology

The year 8 food students have all just completed their major design task of designing and decorating a colourful cake for a five year old child. They began the task by creating their own version of a packet mix cake base, then making the cake in the shape of their design. They then brought in a variety a lollies and decorations to complete their cakes. It was a hectic, yet fun class and the students showed great skills and imagination in completing the task.
