Faith & Wellbeing

Wellbeing and Safeguarding Day

On Wednesday 17th May we had our inaugural Courageous Minds - Wellbeing/Safeguarding day, with Years 5 and 6. The focus of the day was multi layered, yet at the heart of each activity was the students learning about themselves and ways in which they can look after their own wellbeing. There were four groups rotations with a mix of year levels in each.  The sessions were :  Safeguarding, Centering yourself- Body Awareness, Courageous  minds, Meditation and Role Playing situations that could occur in everyday life.

Safeguarding:

Held by Mrs Ferrari.

Safeguarding was about how we can feel safe in our surroundings and what safeguarding means at school.

For example having a fire exit in the building and all visitors wear a visitor’s pass around their neck, so that we know they are safe people.

Role Playing:

Held by Mrs Kennedy.

We looked at how to know if we knew what we would do if something happened to us. We were given a card and had to role play it  e.g. the card would say 'role play an add that showed if you were to get bullied what would you do.'  We had lots of fun.

Meditation:

Held by Mrs Flanagan.

Meditation was about centering yourself and focusing on your breathing in different ways.

We then coloured in a person to represent how we felt at that time.

For example blue was for cold and red for anger.

Courageous Minds:

Held by Mr Buckley.

We revisited Jan Ross’ legacy and looked at ways we can change our mindset.

We did this through meditation and discussion.

In Safeguarding, we explored ways in which we know we can safeguard ourselves:

Emergency exits and drills

A good brekkie in the morning for your brain to work at its optimum

Noting your surroundings

Being with people we know and trust

Tell an adult if you don’t feel safe

Lockdown/safety drills practice

Inform junior school students about Wellbeing and safeguarding

Go somewhere people can see you

Don’t go anyway without  teacher permission

Make sure teachers on duty are aware of people coming into school grounds

If in trouble, stay in a group

Trust your gut feeling or instinct

Parents/Workmen-women sign in and wear a lanyard around school grounds if they are visiting

Teachers/Ange and Imelda wear their St James school badge

Teachers sign in and sign out whenever they are going in/outside of school

Students tell Ange when they go to Canteen and when they come back from the Canteen.

Tell a teacher where you are going before you go

It was an interesting and  informative day and we would like to thank all the teachers who worked with us. Thank you Mrs Ferrari, Mr Buckley,         Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Flanagan.

PILGRIMAGE TO THE HEART

23 Sept - 4 October 2017

A TRIP FOR THE FAMILY IN THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

This is a journey – a pilgrimage – to the heart of Australia.  Many of us live on the periphery of our country and never go to the heart.  As well, many of us live on the periphery of our lives and never take time to go to the heart.  This pilgrimage combines both those activities.

Our first stop is Penola, where we visit the Mary McKillop Centre, recalling how she said:  “If you see a need answer it.”

Then through Adelaide, Coober Pedy to Uluru for 3 nights and onto the Centre with 4 nights in Alice Springs.

Brochures are in the foyer of the school and the church.  Fr Martin can fill you in if you need more details.
