Bus to Oxley. There will be a bus travelling to Oxley for this Saturday's C Team games. The bus will leave from Anderson Street at 8:30am and will be back at Chatswood by around 4:30pm. All players are expected to travel on the bus. Only students who are organising their own transport need to see me.

It was a tough day for most of our teams last Saturday. Oakhill teams were too strong for us across the divisions and in all age groups, along with St Augustine’s Bs who made it very hard for our B teams. This week should see a change of pace with a variety of schools to play in Round 3.

Game of the day: The 14Es with a rare Away win against Oakhill 14 White.

Play of the day: Jake Brown slots a three point winner with only moments to go for the 13Ds.

Deserves a mention: Alex Collinard and Asher Ghannoum – 13Cs, Hugo Kalcher – 13Ds, Anthony Moutevelis and Nick Schuster - 14B.

ISA Round 2 – 1st XI v St Patrick’s College at Breen Oval

The 1st XI lost the toss and started the game in the field for the first time this season. Some positive batting from the opposition top order pushed the score to 3 for 176 before some great fight was shown by the 1st XI bowlers and supported by good fielding to bowl the St Patrick’s team out for 250. Highlights included Liam Kinna and Liam Chang’s 10 over spells which were tight and penetrative; Joe Colgan’s brilliant run out and fine catches from debutant, Rory O’Connell (1st XI player 653) and the captain Stuart Dingley.

A challenging run chase presented itself to the 1st XI who made this more difficult with the loss of three early wickets. However, Stuart Dingley and Charlie Sharp consolidated the situation before attacking the St Patrick’s bowlers with a vital 83 run partnership. Liam Chang brought the team right back in the game before his dismissal with a clean hitting 45 off just 28 balls. Ultimately the 1st XI was bowled out for 197. There were lots of positives in this performance but also the realisation that lessons need to be not just identified but learned from this hard fought match.

St Patrick’s 10/250 ( Liam Kinna 3-36, Liam Chang 2-36) defeated St Pius X 10/197 (Stuart Dingley 64, Liam Chang 45, Charlie Sharp 39).

Rugby

2020 Coaching Appointment:  Last week the College appointed a new External Head Coach in Mike Cross. Mike runs a business called Trytime Rugby where he recruits and manages players but also runs coaching clinics and leads rugby programs for the likes of Chatswood and Harbord Juniors. He is involved with the NSW Waratahs Academy, Coached the Sydney Under 19s at the National Championships this year and previously held coaching positions at Norths, Knox Grammar and Knox Old boys.

The Head Coach position is a restructuring of the 1st XV and Rugby Development Officer roles. Mike will coach the 1st XV and oversee the whole Rugby Program at the College, from appointing the external coaching staff on each age group, writing programs and planning training sessions for the entire school, including the Preps and PE sessions, assisting with selections and grading at the beginning of the year and conduct coach the coaches sessions for teaching staff. The restructuring is all in an effort to increase participation but also improve skills and ultimately the results on the field.

Mike Penistone may continue in the capacity as an external coach in 2020 but not in the position of Rugby Development officer. We thank Mike for his efforts over the years in the role.

Rugby Off-Season Training:  Opens and Under 16s players of 2020 have been invited to attend off-season training which commenced at the beginning of the term. Players have access to the College Gym 5 mornings and 4 afternoons per week, with the Monday morning and Friday afternoon sessions rugby specific. As of this week, players will also have the opportunity to attend field sessions on Thursday afternoons.

Please be advised that College Summer Sport takes priority over rugby training during Term 4.

Year 12 2019 Rugby Dinner:  The SPX Rugby Supporters' Club would like to invite the 2019 Year 12 SPX rugby players and their parents to attend a presentation function at The Willoughby Hotel from 7pm on Monday 18 November to recognise the boys' rugby development through the years at SPX.

At the function each boy will be presented with the traditional SPX individual commemorative plaque celebrating his rugby career at SPX.

The function will be held in the 'Penshurst Room' on the first floor of the hotel.  The Rugby Club will fund quality 'stand up finger food' for the evening.

In order to assist with managing catering for the evening, would you please email Paul O'Neill at paoneill21@gmail.com and confirm your attendance.

Rugby Club Golf Day:  Finally a reminder that the annual Rugby Club Golf Day will be held on Friday 29 November at Roseville Golf Club from 1pm.  Please click on the document below for information and booking details.

NSTA Tennis

What an exciting morning session it was last Saturday with 5 of the 6 games being Pius vs Pius and the 6th game was Pius vs Redlands! We won all 6 games! SPX 22 vs SPX 23 was an exciting match to watch, the boys were quite well matched, the two singles were only lost by 1 game each and the doubles by 2 games. With a final score of 16 games to 16, it came down to sets and SPX 22 just squeezed through to claim the victory! Lucas Halim (SPX 16) and Antony Autore (Team 26) also had an exciting match resulting in a 6-5 win to Lucas, Christian Wong (SPX 14) and Venedict Valerio (SPX 13) also played a close match with Venedict just beating Christian 6-5. Thank you to Michael Chan, Aidan Saraceno and Ashton Pacetta for umpiring and mentoring the early games.

Max Leo and Jayden Chan (SPX 4) played some great tennis and had a clean sweep against Redlands with 3 sets to 0. The SPX 7 vs SPX 6 game was another display of great tennis, with a close singles played against Rory Cooper and Ashton Pacetta with Rory just sneaking in at the end to claim the victory. This was also the first week that we have seen our top team Nick Tozer and Tom Fong (SPX 1) play at home, they certainly didn’t disappoint with a win over Cammeraygal 1.

Well done to all who played last week and thank you to Mrs Keighery, Mr Cook and Mr Webster who very competently ran the competition this week in my absence.

Don’t forget to check the table and draw, to see how your team is going. The weekly draw can also be found by following this link: 2019 NSTA Term 4 - This Week's Teams and Venues

NEXT WEEK UMPIRES/MENTORS: Jared Lam, Michael Whitehead, Richard Gauci and Luca D’Alessandro
