We are a Respectful Relationships School
The Royal Commission into Family Violence identified the critical role that schools and early childhood education have in creating a culture of respect to change the story of family violence for future generations. In 2016, Respectful Relationships (RR) Education became a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from Prep to Year 12 and is being taught in all government and Catholic schools and many independent schools.
Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings. RR is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staff rooms, sporting fields, and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on a student's academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students.
At LPS, we embed elements of RR education as part of our THRIVE Positive Education curriculum where students work on developing emotional literacy, personal strengths, positive coping, problem solving, stress management, help-seeking, gender and identity, and positive gender relations.
On Wednesday the 24th of February, Mrs. Craig and I attended a Community-of-Practice day with other schools in our area to share how LPS are contributing to the field of RR. Our school was lucky enough to receive an award for an outstanding commitment to the implementation of RR during the remote learning period.
A massive well done to all our staff for their continued commitment to helping develop our students’ social and emotional skills as we know that these are just as important as academic skills!
