Word Families Mini Lesson Process

A little snapshot of what some of our indivisualised literacy instruction looks like in the morning.....

At Fatima, we are working to foster in our students a love of reading and language. As part of this journey, the junior school and intervention teachers began training this week in a wonderful program called Phonics in Context. Teachers will have several training sessions throughout the year and will be implementing what they learn in their classroom. This new learning will help our teachers understand how to clearly and effectively teach children about spelling and reading, while enticing their interest in books and language. This week, we learnt about word families, which are groups of words with the same ‘base’. In the photos, you can see how some of our students explored the ‘play’ word family. They learnt about the graphemes (letter combinations) and phonemes (sounds) that make up the words and how to change the words by adding suffixes, prefixes or other bases.
