Careers
RMIT University Design Opportunity
RMIT invite Greater Shepparton SC Year 11 and 12 students who are interested in a career in design to visit RMIT’s City campus and discover tools and strategies to support preparation for and transition to tertiary education.
Now in its tenth year, Ready Set Design is a series of three workshops focused on careers and tertiary programs in design. Workshops are held during the April, June and September school holidays.
We recommend that students attend all three sessions to get the most out of Ready Set Design. For 2021, we are also offering an additional digital session for each event, to extend the range of design disciplines explored.
NOTE: Registrations will open several weeks before each workshop. If you register for one Ready Set Design workshop, you will be notified when registrations open for each following workshop.
Federation University -
Year 12 Student Award
Federation University kindly donated a picnic rug for one of our Year 12’s. Darci Smith received this in recognition of the great start that she has made to her Year 12. Darci has been very organised and productive in her use of private study sessions. She’s a terrific student and keen footballer with Shepparton United’s women’s team. Darci will be getting her drivers licence in July and was really excited to be given the rug, she plans on giving it pride of place in her car for when she goes on picnics.
University Pathway Planning
If you’re in Year 12 and planning to apply for university courses this year, there are many dates, programs and initiatives you will need to be aware of. These dates and initiatives will vary between States. Having a diary or a planning app on your phone or device will help you to feel organised and ensure you don’t miss any key dates. If you are wondering what you could be doing during Term 1 to get prepared for the application period, please check out some suggestions:
TERM 1
Have an appointment with one of the GSSC Careers team - Book in an appointment with your campus Career Practitioner to explore any course/career/occupation goals you may have. On Wanganui campus this would be Graeme Crosbie or Ruth O’Bree and on McGuire campus it would be Susan Barr. Alternatively, some senior students have been already working closely with Simone Masters or Tarsh Boyko. If it’s not possible to see them in person to book an appointment you can message them via Teams. They will be able to give you advice specific to the State you would like to study in, the best courses to suit your goals and also suggest other options you may not have considered.
Don’t have any course goals or career interests? No worries! They will be able to assist you in identifying interest areas that align with your values, skills, academic aptitude, and personal competencies. It’s not likely that a once-off catch up will address all of your concerns, or identify what your career journey might look like, but rest assured it will be painless and it will help reduce your anxieties!
Participate in career events
It’s never too early to attend career events. You will be able to explore course options, ask questions and speak with course advisers. Many events will be held online this year which will help if you can’t travel. Read the Career News or the Career page in our school newsletter each week to check for upcoming events.
Undertake work experience
Talk to your career adviser about undertaking work experience during the Term break
Speak to past students
Ask your career adviser if they can link you with a past student who is studying or working in the area you are passionate about. You and your parent/guardian may be able to Zoom with them and ask them questions.
Book a consultation
Several universities offer a one-to-one chat service via Zoom. Ask your career adviser about how to book in for an appointment.
Research university courses
Use the following methods to research courses:
- University sites, use the course search function on university websites (e.g., nursing) or browse study areas (e.g., allied health).
- Tertiary Admission Centres (TACs). Use the course search function on the State based TACs you are interested in. Below are websites:
Victoria | www.vtac.edu.au |
NSW/ACT | www.uac.edu.au |

The GSSC Careers Website www.gssccareers.com

It also has an extensive information database in ‘Job & Career Search Information’ in the Student menu of the front page. Alternatively by logging in to your account on the website and completing Career Interest quizzes you can be linked to the careers and related courses directly so you can access all of the information about pathways and what these careers involve.

Work Placement Dates - Industry & Enterprise and VCAL WRS
In Unit 1 VCE Industry & Enterprise (which almost all of our Year 10’s complete) students will be encouraged to complete one, but it is possible they may be able to do more. Given that there are approximately 370 students in Year 10, not all students will be able to complete placements at the same time.
Instead, we will identify three weeks (one in each of the first three terms) when particular I & E classes will be scheduled for placements. Ideally, they will take place with their own class, but we understand that this may not always be possible.
Mr Crosbie, Mr Lythgo and Mr Reid’s classes (six in total) will be attempting to complete theirs in the week 22-26th March. (late term 1)
Mr Harris, Mr Townsend & Ms Panella’s classes (six classes in total) will be attempting to complete theirs in the week of 31st May – 4th June (term 2)
Ms Sharma and Ms Li’s classes (four classes in total) will be attempting to complete theirs in the week of 6th – 10th September (term 3)
As a school we will be as flexible as we can be to accommodate work placements for our students however sometimes it may be preferable that these take place during school holidays.
VCAL WRS students work placements will be available in specific blocks but also with the flexibility to individualise dates according to student interest and needs as well as employer opportunity access.
21st – 25th June (during Unit 1 exam week) is available for all VCAL students
4th – 15th October (first 2 weeks of term 4) is available to Yr 12 VCAL students, before they return to finalise end of year formalities.
1st Nov – 11th November (during Unit 2 exams) is available to Yr 11 VCAL students.
** Please note that dates are subject to change.

Why Women in Trades Matter
It is a common misconception that apprenticeships and traineeships are "trades only" or "male only" study paths. In the current day and age, women working in trades matter; they bring value to an organisation and have the potential to change the future of the workforce. Download a fantastic resource about why female students should consider a trade pathway via https://bit.ly/2PE8gJr
