FOOD STUDIES

As you are aware we have provided a snapshot of some of the recipes our Year 7s have cooked over the past couple of years.

Now, let’s take a look at a reflection of the semester from one of our students in Food Studies Unit 1, this year:

Learning about food, the history behind it, the different techniques, flavours and textures is an experience unlike any other at McKinnon Secondary College.

You are given freedom and creativity at times to create dishes of your choice, as well as learning the important skills around food safety, healthy eating and learning to follow recipes to a tee.

I can honestly say that food studies is my favourite subject, because food is such an important and integral part of life and is ingrained into almost everything we do.

Not only is it so fun to cook with your peers, but it is so rewarding when the cake comes out perfectly risen or the pasta just al dente. I know my friends definitely enjoy trying the various creations that come out of my kitchen!

Learning to cook and cook well, is a lifetime skill that is useful, relaxing and most importantly delicious!

Last week the class cooked a Coffee Meringue Roulade and we have enclosed photos of Laura’s very appetizing creation.

Some of the recipes that the Year 11s have cooked so far are:

  • Spicy chicken satay and rice with fennel and apple slaw
  • Lemon myrtle biscuits
  • Minestrone soup and onion/cheese focaccia
  • Mediterranean risotto
  • Green tea noodle with salmon and red curry sauce

We wish you all the best for the holidays and hope you too may enjoy some cooking…...just for fun.
