VISUAL ARTS MATTERS

What is happening in the Visual Arts?

Well, I’m glad you asked!

Here at McKinnon Secondary College, all the way down in T Block, the buzz has not stopped all semester! (Except for a short quiet time during lockdown....)

Our lunchtimes are hectic with enthusiastic students excitedly working on their art. The Year 12 Studio Arts students almost live in T7. The gorgeous new Mac lab is regularly visited by Media and VCD students. The displays on the walls in the art rooms and the foyer are regularly updated including exciting new topics explored in Sculpture classes.

Trolleys of stunning anime inspired Year 8 ceramic sculptures rattle between T block and the ceramics room, up the new ramp that was installed earlier this year. The new Campus cannot open soon enough and will mean that every Year 8 Ceramics will again be taught in a ceramics dedicated space.

Our wonderful new Art Technician, Ms Caitlin Hurwitz has cleaned, tidied and organised the Art rooms to a spectacular level and we are so lucky to have her on our team. Our wonderful Arts Captains have been busy interviewing students for the Visual Arts Magazine Committee. Arts staff have been busy reviewing and writing new Year 8 and 9 curriculum for the new campus. Exciting new tasks using the laser cutter and 3D printer are being tested.

And we are all enjoying seeing our students’ artworks that Mr Eglezos has been sharing on our school’s instagram account (artsmatters_mck).

Finally, we are eagerly receiving submissions for this month’s art competition, with the theme ‘Threatened Australian species.’ For information on threatened Australian species, search Australian animals on these two websites: IUCN Red List or World Wildlife Foundation.
