Our Catholic Identity

Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop - Feast Day

This Sunday, 8 August, we celebrate the feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary saw the needs of poor children living in remote areas of Australia and founded the Sisters of St Joseph in 1866 to provide education for these children. She and the sisters shared the life of the poor, offering special care to women and children in great need. She is remembered for her eagerness to discover God's will in all things, for her charity, care and compassion for others, and for her complete trust and faith in God. Mary is the first Australian to be recognised by the Catholic Church as a saint.

We can draw on the strength and courage of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop as we work together to provide quality Catholic education for all our students/children. Teachers will make this a focus of their Religious Education lesson next Monday along with celebrating in the school online assembly over the next two weeks.

“If we have love in our hearts, we shall have God with us.” (1890)

Loving God, you give us all that we truly need.

Inspired by Mary of the Cross, may we learn to focus on the things in life that  really matter – caring for others, engaging in good works and living out the  Gospel message in what we do and say.

Help us to live like Mary,

trusting in you and living with full confidence in your love.  We ask this prayer through Jesus, your son.

Amen
