Year 5 Spotlight

Year 5 Gold Fever

On Thursday 26th June, all of Year 5 packed their bags and headed off to Sovereign Hill to strike gold!

First up, we enjoyed an educational session learning about how Australian Aboriginal people were impacted by the gold rush. We discovered how they utilised their expertise to survive, such as trading warm animal furs and local information for tools, food or gold/money.

We loved climbing the old Mining Tower pump, and we were amazed during the Gold Pour exhibit – the gold really shone!

The underground mine experience was thrilling; being in the small dark tunnels just like the real miners, and following the story of the ‘Welcome Nugget’ discovery.

Panning for gold in the river was a highlight, some people even found specks of gold in the stream – Eureka!

By the end of our busy day, we enjoyed wandering the main street, purchasing ‘Wanted!’ posters and buying the famous ‘Raspberry Drops’ from the Lolly Shop!
