Serena Maynard

Meet Serena, our Perth transplant with a penchant for performance and adventure!

Where are you from?

I am from Perth but have lived in Victoria for about eight years. I love Melbourne, but miss the warm weather, the beaches in WA, and of course, my parents and sisters.

What are your hobbies, and how did you get into them?

My biggest hobby would have to be Musical Theatre, so anything involving singing and dancing. Before becoming a teacher I studied a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theatre in Ballarat. I love singing around the house or with friends, going to dance classes and seeing shows.

I also like anything that involves being outdoors, like hiking, camping and exploring different parts of Australia.

Do you have a favourite holiday? Why or why not?

My favourite holiday would have to be when I went to Africa in 2015. The highlight of the trip was climbing up Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The hike took seven days to complete and it was incredible to feel the effect that high altitude can have on your body. On the last day we started walking at midnight so we could reach the summit at sunrise, we were walking so slowly but it felt exhausting at that altitude (5895 meters!).

What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?

When the weather is warm, my favourite way to spend the day off is to be outside as much as possible, going swimming, for a bike ride or hiking. Even just sitting and reading a book in the sunshine is the best!

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Definitely pasta! I could happily eat any kind of pasta every day for the rest of my life.

Prue Middleton

Prue's our Central Coast surfer who also plays a fast game of netball!

Where are you from?

I was born and raised on the Central Coast, NSW, it’s very different from a wintery Melbourne!

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

I would love to head back to the UK to visit my friends. I spent three years living in Manchester and miss my friends and my favourite café Tak terribly.

What are your hobbies, and how did you get into them?

I love to surf! Growing up in a coastal town meant I spent a lot of time at the beach, participating in Nippers and growing to love the ocean.

My favourite part of the week is Tuesday night netball with my friends. It’s always a laugh and we are on a winning streak at the moment! I’m also beginning to enjoy gardening, currently I am trying to figure out how to tackle a very overgrown jungle of a garden.

Was the last thing you read/best book you have read?

The last book I read was ‘A Room Made of Leaves’ by Kate Grenville. I absolutely loved the imagery of the Australian landscape. It was interesting to read about Australia’s colonial history from a woman’s point of view. The author was inspired by a real colonial woman, Elizabeth Macarthur, and I spent time after reading the book reading about her real life in such a harsh environment and time in history.
