Year 7 Update

Year 7 Update – Math

Wow, did someone say we are halfway through the year already? Time has certainly flown by this year, and for our wonderful year seven cohort, what a journey it has been so far.

Over the holidays, many year seven teachers, took some time to reflect on how far their students have come in the past 5 months.

We have achieved a lot of learning in five months and are so proud of how resilient and focused students have been able to remain.

Most recently, we completed a unit of work on fractions, decimals and percentages. It was great to see students making connections to real-world problems involving the skills they learned in this topic. Students learned how to convert between mixed-number fractions and improper fractions, and investigated how this skill is useful when baking. For example, can you work out how many quarter cups of flour I will need if my recipe calls for 2 1/4 cups of flour?

Students also applied these skills to larger fractions and worked in groups to complete an equivalent fraction spiral.

As term 3 is beginning, students are starting to investigate Statistics and Probability, and learn how to become mini data collectors. You will see students recording data about their own mobile phone application use in the coming weeks, as preparation for their project GAT.

Students will use their own data to complete a range of problems involving statistics and probability.

Looking forward to another great semester in year 7 math.

Regards,

Miss Walker and the year 7 team.
