Year 7

Highlighting 7P

Welcome to the wonderful class of 7P!

More often than not, you can find them in W10, unless they’re adventuring to other sections of the school for subjects like German/Japanese, Performing Arts, Woodwork, Science or PE.

7P is a passionate, funny and tight-knit class, and you can usually find them having class discussions and sharing their opinions when it comes to just about anything. You can rely on 7P to provide you with interesting and left-of-field opinions, and to ask questions that you may not expect, which always makes for an interesting lesson.

Although the lockdown at the start of this semester meant that they could not see each other and that they had to be adaptable, the level of resilience and flexibility shown by the class demonstrated just how well the young people of today deal with the unexpected. 7P are a wonderful bunch of kids with a lot of brilliant ideas, and I am excited to see them into Year 8.

English

In English this term with Ms. Kaur, 7P have been studying the film text of Wonder, and have just begun working in literature circles. By choosing their own novels, 7P have shown just how diverse they are in their interests, and how well they can work in groups to reach a decision of what to study, even when it seems as though there is no solution. I look forward to reading their analysis of their novels, and hearing their opinions of Wonder.

Humanities

In Humanities we investigated the Ancient World of Egypt. Students made their own pyramids before we mummified a tomato, then watched over the next two months as it got totally gross.

Students looked at parts of Ancient Egyptian society including social structure, hieroglyphics, technology and their relationship with the Nile.

Performing Arts

The term began with Embellishing a Story and Hot Seat Interviews where students wrote a short version of a story about themselves. Stories were selected for students to improvise an embellished version of their story in the Hot Seat Interviews. Students demonstrated imagination and team- work in figuring out who was telling the true version of the story and who was ‘making it up”. Our next few classes were online with students participating in our sessions with enthusiasm. We covered:

  • how different types of music create different moods
  • The Play that goes wrong – so many things can go wrong on stage, but these actors did an exceptionally good job of creating mishaps in their performance
  • Learning the Cup Song Rhythm – students watched a video created by their teacher and then demonstrated their rhythm skills online. Some students chose to submit a video of their performance – great work!

Now that we’re back at school students are continuing with their journey in Performing Arts with a unit on Mime in Drama and an Introduction to Keyboard technology in Music.

7P students have started this term investigating various habitats and the interactions that occur throughout these habitats. They have explored adaptations of animals that take place due to these interactions, along with food chains and food webs that show the energy transfer through the ecosystems. This unit will culminate in a squid dissection where students will draw on their prior knowledge to discuss the adaptations of a squid and its interactions in its natural habitat.
