Web Preferences 2022

The annual Web Preferences program is now open for students to carefully select the subjects they wish to study next year. The key things students need to remember when selecting subjects are:

What am I good at?
What do I enjoy?
Where have I found success?
What are my future career interests and backup plans?
What is my preferred learning style?
What are my teacher recommendations?
Choosing subjects that meet the tertiary pre-requisite requirements for further education

All students from Year 8 – Year 11 have been emailed the login instructions for Web Preferences Access.

Web Preference and subject information is accessible online. We encourage ALL students to access the VSC website > curriculum tab and read the curriculum handbooks, watch the short videos and Web Preferences instructional videos to make an informed decision about the subjects they wish to study next year.

Students interested in studying a VET course as part of their Year 10 or Year 11 program are encouraged to watch the VET video, choose a course from the VET handbooks, select VET on their Web Preferences then collect an Expression of Interest form from Pathways.

All 2nd Year VET students wanting to continue with their course must select VET on Web Preferences and complete an Expression of Interest form for 2022 enrolment. Key points:

Login using your school email address and access code
Students applying for subjects in Year 9 > Year 11 must select a minimum of 12 units + reserves
Students applying for Year 12 must select a minimum of 10 units + reserves
Select subjects in order of importance
Do not repeat subjects
All boxes with an ! mark must have a subject listed in order to submit and print the receipt
Multiple submissions can be made, the system will take the latest submission as the final
Web Preferences close for all year levels – Monday 16th August
Signed receipts are returned to Pathways for students applying for Year 10, 11 & 12
Signed receipts are returned to the Year 8 Students Managers for students applying for Year 9

All current 2021 Year 9 Students will participate in individual course counselling via house groups to check selections are appropriate and will provide the student with a broad range of experiences in Year 10 that align with their future pathways. Students can check their Compass schedule for their allocated session date and time.

A signed draft copy of the Web Preferences receipt is required at this session with selections subject to change depending on discussion and identified future pathways.

Year 9 My Career Insights - Morrisby Online Program

We are now in the final profiling stages of the Year 9 My Career Insights – Morrisby Online. Any students that have not started or completed their assessments are encouraged to complete urgently.

Current Stats:

> 204 students have completed their Morrisby Assessment - Well done!

> 28 students have created an account or are active in the Morrisby assessments

> 12 students have not yet started

Congratulations to the 204 students that have completed this task, such an awesome effort! All students that complete their Morrisby profile and return their parental consent form are able to participate in the highly beneficial 1:1 interview with a Morrisby Career Counsellor this term and continuing into term 4. During this session Rob will unpack and discuss the Morrisby report, explain the possible jobs that match student’s abilities, interests and personality.

We encourage the 28 students to log back in into www.morrisby.com using the original login email and complete the assessments. See Pathways if you are unable to log back in. You are almost done!

Finally we urge the remaining 12 Year 9 students to complete this task.

Year 10 Careers Fast Track 3rd Stage - 1:1 Counselling

We are in the final stages of delivering the CFT counselling which has temporarily returned to Teams online interviews. Rob is busy unpacking students ‘Personal Learning and Career Pathway Plan’, personality profile and how this impacts decisions and the world around us, student aspirations, preferred careers and the subjects required to complete in VCE in preparation for tertiary studies, apprenticeship, traineeship or work.

There are still quite a few Year 10 students yet to start or finish the career quizzes. Please check with your child to see if they have completed stage 1 – the quizzes. Reminder emails will be sent to these students and their parents/carers to start/finish this process. Only students that have completed the CFT quizzes which produces the Personal Learning and Career Pathway Plan can only attend this very beneficial career interview.The CFT program is very different from the Year 9 Morrisby program measuring aptitude.

The CFT program focuses on individual personality, values, learning styles, preferences to further study, career and work. Both the Year 9 and Year 10 career programs complement each other.

Year 12

All Year 12 students will have an individual counselling session to identify their specific pathway and support them in the transition stage. Pre-interview pathway sessions for each house have occurred at lunchtimes this week to inform the students of the process. Students will identify from Tertiary Pathway – applying to study a University or TAFE courses or Alternative Pathways through Apprenticeship/Traineeship or work.

Our IT department are in the process of setting up a Pathways booking schedule for students to select the preferred date and session when they have a private study period or are able to attend one of the other sessions at recess, lunch or after school.

Tertiary pathway students can sign up to VTAC www.vtac.edu.au to create their VTAC ID and start thinking about the tertiary courses they would like to add to their application in preparation for our interview which also covers SEAS and Scholarship. Students are assisted in the VTAC application process ensuring they have a range of options and back up plans in preparation for the ATAR release in December when they can move their selections around.

Alternative Pathway students will discuss their plans and are assisted in applying for apprenticeship/traineeships, enrolling in pre-apprenticeship courses or preparing and looking for work beyond Year 12.

Barista Training Sessions Update

Barista training will return to VSC in Term 3 to roll out the remaining 4 sessions to our enthusiastic Baristas who I know are super keen to fire up the coffee machines and create volumes of Espresso’s, Lattes, Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates to very appreciative staff and senior students. We shall inform each group once the dates have been confirmed with the RTO.

Defence Force Work Experience Program

The Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP) will recommence this year in Victoria. Work experience options at various bases throughout the year for Army, Air Force and Navy, starting from late March 2021. For more information please visit www.defence.gov.au/workexperience

All DWEP placements will be conducted in accordance with our COVID Safe plan and are subject to relevant State/Territory COVID-19 Guidelines and Defence Restrictions. Please be aware that this may result in a placement being changed, postponed and/or cancelled at short notice.

Work Experience

Work experience participation is optional at VSC, however we strongly encourage all students aged 15yrs+ to get involved in this very beneficial and rewarding program. Students can undertake Work Experience every year until they graduate VSC.

Work experience provides young people with a taste of the real world of work and a clearer understanding of a particular industry, field or business they may be interested in pursuing in the future.

Work experience assists in career discovery and exploration, goal setting and decision making whilst preparing students for VCE or VCAL, future tertiary studies, apprenticeship/traineeships or full time work.

There are no designated time frames for students to complete placements as we believe a flexible delivery arrangement provides students with a better opportunity to meet the availability and operational time frames of businesses and industries within the community. This also means we are not competing with other local schools which can limit student’s placement opportunities.

Placement dates are arranged through consultation and negotiation between the employer, school and student to maximise the experience. However, if your young person is not going on the Central Australia to Darwin trip, they may want to consider the last week of Term 3 as the perfect opportunity to undertake work experience.

Career development is the lifelong process of managing life, learning and work (paid and unpaid) over our lifespan. The ability to make informed decisions, manage and transition through change for a personally determined future.

Young people build their career development through self-awareness; understanding how they make decisions and how these decisions impact future aspirations through exploration, identifying interests, values and preferred learning styles through careers exploration activities such as Morrisby in Year 9 and Careers Fast Track in Year 10. The ability to research a wide range of career options helping them to select subjects they may enjoy learning whilst aligning to tertiary course pre-requisite requirements in the future or apprenticeship/traineeship requirements and work.

Career development is further enhanced by juggling the expectations and requirements of school with extra-curricular activities, sport and family responsibilities, part-time work, community involvement and social interests.
