Principal Introduction

Dear EMC Community,

I wanted to thank you for your continued support and positive approach to the College's COVID Safe plan. Students have been wonderful over the course of this week and we all appreciate the effort, endeavour and compliance that they have shown.

This year has been full of adaptability, challenge and trauma for all of us, so I thought it would be nice to check in and celebrate some of the outstanding work that has been happening at the College.

Congratulations to the College Captains for 2022

I am really proud of the outstanding applications for the 2022 College Captain. The depth of talent at our College is outstanding, and such a wonderful reflection on the work of our entire community. The school captains and vice captains were able to demonstrate a real commitment to their learning and engagement in school life. They are each outstanding roles models, living the College values of respect, inclusion, care and kindness. I would like to acknowledge the new College Captains and Vice Captains for 2022.

Student Work

This week I had the privilege of participating in the presentation of class awards for a Year 9 writing assessment. I was so incredibly proud of the work of our students and the successful outcomes that they all achieved. Ms Laura Priggen is to be congratulated on the development of such an engaging and skills focused unit for the students. The student news articles drew not only on writing skills, but flow, argument, design and layout for impact, teamwork and collaboration.

After the awards were given out I asked the students about the values and skills that this learning developed in each of them. The students spoke freely about compassion, perspective, gratitude, teamwork, patience, understanding, communication and leadership. I have included the overall highlighted piece by Ruby McGrath.

All student work will soon be available in the front office for a quick read.

Inclusion at EMC

EMC is proud of the work that we do in the wellbeing area with our Positive Education - THRIVE network and the wellbeing supports provided to all students across the curriculum and via the wellbeing team. I am excited to announce that this program will extend further with Department of Education (DET) Tier 2 Inclusion Funding. EMC has been included in the first round of the TIER 2 inclusion funding in 2022. This funding has allowed the College to employ Allied Health support, with a Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Developmental Psychologist. In addition to the employment of highly skilled staff we have also created a designated work space for this team to engage with assessments and support students and parents where a learning difficulty has been identified. This is a significant program which will positively impact the learning journey of many students across our College.

Student success during transition and step up

As we prepare for the end of Semester 2 and look for a fresh start at Step UP, it is important for all families to take a moment and reflect on 2021. Using a strengths based reflection, identifying what is working well, what are the opportunities for improvement, students can start to develop short term goals that are attainable. This could be reading routines, study plan, reading texts, seeking support and intervention knowledge and understanding about key concepts and knowledge. Setting goals and actions to support achievement gives a deeper meaning to time at school and supports student learning and personal growth.

We are focused on ensuring that every child demonstrates significant learning growth across all areas of the curriculum and look forward to working with you to ensure the success of every student.

As we head in to the long weekend, please drive safely if you are going away, take care and stay safe.

Dean King.
