from the Principal

Dear Parents, Teachers and Students
Monday November 6th (MELBOURNE CUP EVE)
As a result of very poor student attendance over the last few years (more than 80% of students absent) on the day prior to Melbourne Cup Day College Council has previously agreed that we should run a modified program on this day.
A planned and relevant program of study will operate for Years 7 to 10 students, however the program will be modified to take into account the numbers of students attending on the day.
VCE students are studying for their end of year exams. Year 12 students will already have finished classes and begun their end of year exams (for Year 12 exam timetable go to http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vcaanavigator_web.pdfYear 11 exams start on Friday 10th November.
Commencement of 2018 classes in November
As was the case in previous years, Cheltenham Secondary College students will commence their 2018 classes prior to the end of the year. As stated in the last two issues of the Cheltonian, the “roll over” for all classes will commence on Tuesday November 28th , at which time all students will commence work in the next year level. Attendance is compulsory. Classes for students in Years 11 and 12 next year (2018) will run from this date until Friday December 8th. Classes for students in Years 8, 9 and 10 next year (2018) will run until Friday December 15th.
Therefore, students currently in Years 10 and 11 will finish school at 3.10pm on December 8th, and students currently in Years 7, 8 and 9 will have formal classes until 3.10pm on December 15th.
The pre-holiday activity program will commence on Monday December 18th.
The early “roll over” into 2018 classes is being done in order to give our students the best possible start to their studies for next year.
Presentation Night Thursday December 15th The
Roffey Family Award
Applications are now open for The Roffey Family Award for Volunteerism. If your child volunteers in the community, is involved in fund raising for charity or helps out in the community please consider nominating them. The Roffey Family Volunteerism award is always awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding qualities and as such is considered to be a prestigious award within the College community. The award and cheque for $100 are given out at Presentation night. See the application form below or contact Ms Helen Page, Assistant Principal at the college.
Last week for Year 12
I have to pass on my thanks to our Senior School team, in particular Brett Younger, Peter Mathews, Katerina Kougmioutsis and Adam Collings for their leadership over the last weeks of school for the Year 12s. Thanks also to all of the staff who have supported the team. The week was “seen off” in great spirit, with no mishaps, no incidents and with all relationships in tact!
We had a fantastic night at the Valedictory dinner. Congratulations to our students and the families at Cheltenham for the way they presented themselves and for Peter Mathews and members of the Senior School for their organisation. It was flawless.
We wish all of our students the very best over the next few weeks. The state wide VCE exams started with the English exam on Wednesday 1st November and Wednesday 22nd November. The VCE results will be available by the second last week of term. A very anxious time for everyone but I am sure our students will achieve great results.
Report Writing Day and Staff PD Day
As you may have seen on the college calendar, Friday November 24th is Report Writing Day teaching staff and Monday November 27th is a College Staff Professional Development day. Students are not required at school on these two days.
Please don’t hesitate to contact any of the Assistant Principals or myself if you wish to discuss these matters further.
