VCE VM & TSC

Year 10 Sustainability

Year 10 VM students have been working on native duck nesting boxes for our north campus dam area. The students had to problem solve repeatedly to build boxes from waterproof ply and then mount them on posts in the water. They did a brilliant job working together showing fabulous problem solving, communication and teamwork skills.

Year 10 Industry

Ben Kelly and Justin Mason have been training our Year 10 students in construction skills as they build an animal petting house for primary students. Once this is completed our primary students will be able to spend time with rabbits and guinea pigs during set times each week. This enclosure will be a wonderful addition to the primary playground area with many positives for young and older students alike.

Thanks to Peter Zwiersen for coordinating this sensational project.

VM Campground Work

Year 11 & 12 VM students have finished the north campground area in readiness for the ‘Into the Wild’ sessions with Grade 5 & 6 students. VM students will work in teams to run activities such as campfire cooking, wilderness camping and wide games and will be assessed on their communication, leadership and teamwork skills. We tested the new campfire with marshmallows and it works brilliantly. A huge thank you goes to James Siede for coordinating this project.

Reclaimed

Senior VM students have started collecting Number 2 & 4 recyclable lids from the new containers as a part of the Reclaimed project launched with staff earlier this term. We are aiming to expand this program to the entire school community once we have the correct systems in place. Collected lids will be granulated and hopefully turned into new products in the future.

Pantry Plus Community Garden

Ben Kelly from Bayside’s maintenance team has been working with Year 11 VM students as a part of the Certificate II in Active Volunteering course to build a community garden for Pantry Plus. The students will fill the new garden beds with soil later this term and plant crops in Term 4. These vegetables can then be used to cook nutritious meals for local families struggling to provide meals for their families.
