Talents

In Secondary school, students are encouraged to put their abilities or talents into use to help others and to contribute to the community, as we are all part of the one body of Christ. We want our students to also understand that He gave them to each of us for a reason.

God created everyone with unique abilities to help serve the world we live in. However, many students (and adults) struggle to identify or may not even be aware of these talents that are given by God for His greater purpose. Regardless, it’s important that we take time to thank God for all He has given.

Your talent can be the ability to give words of affirmation, musical tone or song writing, determination in the sporting arena, having a fun personality, giving to those in need, teaching skills to the next generation, problem solving skills, just to name a few.

Over the last two weeks, many of our Secondary students put some of their talents into action by testing their abilities in various extra-curricular environments, such as the Australian Maths Competition, and the SIS Teen Chef or Lawn Bowls Championships. A huge thank you to all students who participated or competed for the school.

“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So, if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.” - Romans 12:6-8

Thrive Extension Program

This Monday also saw the official launch of ‘Thrive’, our new supervised after-school extension program for any Year 7-12 student who wishes to attend. The program runs from 3:30pm – 4:30pm, and is located on North Campus in room N5. It was lovely to see many students, of various year levels, take up the opportunity to meet with their teacher(s) and also engage with other teachers who were present to assist, even if they don’t have them in a classroom this year.

Naturally, the complimentary Milo, hot chocolate, and biscuits were a very popular addition. Students are reminded to register prior to attending each week, using the QR code or URL link provided on Thrive posters located around the College. Parents are also reminded that they need to give permission on Sentral (one-time-only), via the parent portal on the College website.

Thrive Extension Program

The first week of our Thrive Extension program was an exciting and successful launch! We were thrilled to have 9 enthusiastic students in attendance, eager to explore new opportunities and get assistance from the teachers in attendance.

Students who wish to utilise this opportunity are encouraged to register using the QR code or URL link displayed on the posters scattered throughout the College. Parents will need to grant a one-time Sentral permission to enable their children's participation in the program.

Year 7 Science

Students are currently looking at the topic of “Mixtures”. During class last week, students investigated the concept that substances of a mixture could be separate on properties such as different boiling points. Shown are photos from a practical investigation that involved separating a salt (NaCl) from water that had been mixed together to form a solution.

Students brought the solution to boiling point, allowing the water to evaporate off and leaving behind a crystallised form of the salt.

9/10 Athletic Development

Students in Athletic Development term so far have been learning content related to the anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) of the musculoskeletal system. This includes the correct anatomical names of different muscles. Before beginning the topic, students were asked in groups to label muscles they already knew on their parents as shown below.

Currently in class students are progressing in the unit to learning basic principles to do biomechanical analysis on their own skills within different sporting skills. This includes use of ICT tools, including video analysis on iPads.

The Australian Mathematics Competition

50 students from Years 7 - 12 participated in the renowned Australian Mathematics competition on Wednesday 2nd August. The competition serves as an excellent opportunity for the students to nurture their critical thinking skills and deepen their love for mathematics.

It was fantastic to witness the intense focus and adept mathematical problem-solving skills displayed throughout the 75-minute challenge. We look forward to seeing the results of the competition in a few weeks time!

Rich Learning in Mathematics

The students in Year 7 were actively engaging in a Rich Learning activity this past week as part of their Math Pathways curriculum. These activities aim to challenge their problem-solving skills and foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. These activities not only make the learning process enjoyable and engaging but also instil a sense of curiosity and confidence in tackling complex mathematical problems.

Year 10 Science

In Year 10 Science, students have been learning about God’s awesome Creation. They recently dissected a chicken wing and were able to identify seven different types of tissue: bone, cartilage, muscle, ligament, tendon, skin and connective tissue. They learnt about thefunction of each type of tissue and considered how different structures contribute to thewing’s ability to move.

SIS Teen Chef

On Thursday 3rd August students Chloe Kidney, Jasmine Hooper, Summer Buckley and Alex Cardona represented Bayside Christian College at the SIS Teen Chef Cooking Competition. This was an entire day event where students had to plan ahead and prepare a recipe for both a main and dessert dish.

Students were allowed 40 minutes to set up and prepare, 90 minutes cooking time and required to prepare 4 main and 4 dessert plates. Students were not allowed to speak with a teacher or receive any help while cooking. Meals were judged by representatives from the Australian Culinary Federation. The students did an amazing job and had a great time.

SIS Lawn Bowls

On Tuesday 8th August students from Mr Goschnick's Year 11 PE class represented Bayside at the SIS Lawn Bowls Championships. The Bayside team played six qualifying matches. The first was a draw, followed by two losses before winning their final three qualifying games. The final game Bayside played was for 7th overall position on the day which we won by a score of 7-0.

This sealed our 4th straight win to end the day on a positive note and placing 7th out of 14 total teams. Every player on the Bayside team genuinely had some great shots and contributed over the day, but a special mention to Madeleine Gascard for what was likely the shot of the day for our team pictured below, knocking away an opponent’s bowl in the process. It was a great experience all around and the team is eager to improve their placing at next year’s tournament.
